I've just changed the steering fluid on my E39. I know that it is supposed to be
"lifetime" filling but i don't really believe that (been there with the so-called lifetime
filling for the A/T...) so decided to change the steering oil.
On the reservoir cap there is marking "ATF oil only" so i've used what i've left in the
garage - few bottles of Dexron III fluid, a legacy of my previous car, Merc.
The fluid that came out wasn't looking too good - it was very dark, black-reddish and
actually i'd barely call it a "colored" fluid. There is actually nothing wrong with my steering
but i guess new oil filling won't hurt. After coming home, i've checked with TIS
if there is anything else to do about bleeding, and no, just turn lock-to-lock few times
with engine running and that's about it. So i've done everything right, EXCEPT,
noticed that all allowable ATF oils to put in the steering are Dexron II spec
(you know i'm a little bit dumb "a red atf is just red atf"). I know that when it comes to automatic transmissions DII and DIII are, in most cases, interchangeable, but i wonder if anything wrong may happen to the pump or steering gear? Anyone ?
thanks!!!
