my dealer says trailering 3000 lbs. is not problem at all. need to take bikes (1000 lbs.) and trailer (1800 lbs. i think) to the track. i have the 2.5 litre and fear killing the transmission. any advise?

I also have the 2.5 auto. I installed the BMW hitch and successfully tow a 1400 lb boat on the highway. No real affect on performance, except a noticeable drop in fuel economy. Handles great.

a boat trailer doesn't weigh all that much does it? can you remember what your dealer told you about max? thanks. i'll end up having it installed and see what happens from there.

Why would you buy a 2.5? The 2.5 badge looks terrible. You should have bought the 3.0, the the 3.0 badge looks much nicer (serriously, no I don't have a serrious comment, please disregard).

I used the 3.0 to tow my 3000# boat on a 190 mile run. It was a strain going up hills and I more or less had to use the manual mode for shifting to keep the rpm's up.
I'll now use it 2x per year on a 35 mile run and have done this once already with no problems. The 3.0 is suited for this type of towing but not for long runs with a heavy load.
