Umm.. according to JD power's site it actually lists the Lexus RX330 as the 2005 Initial Quality winner (Lexus wins it every year):

However the BMW X3 was a top three runner up along with the Infiniti FX series (refer to page 6 of the pdf file, bottom right corner):

I found it on MSN's site at: http://autos.msn.com/advice/article.aspx?contentid=4020143&src=LP%20used

It is listing it with the Lexus RX-330 and the Infiniti FX-Series.

I guess JD Powers overlooked the windows that open randomly, the doors that don't lock and unlock, and other electrical issues. That said, the X3 is a great vehicle but lacking in initial quality.

I know I never think to post that the door opened today with no problem, or that the light turned on when I flipped the switch, however I would post if it didnít.

The problems you listed have been experienced by a FEW, but the majority of X3ís donít exhibit these problems. Having a 2004 X3 with 25,000 miles now, I can say that this has been the most trouble free car I have ever owned.

JeffI hope that shuts up the trolls that pop up here bemoaning the fact that the X3 is not built in Germany by a BMW factory.

The point of the JD Powers survey of course is to list the problems per vehicle. The fewer the problems the higher the rating. So for the X3 to rate second to the RX330 means (relative to the category group of cars) the X3 did very well; and in particular for a 2nd year production vehicle.

Clearly however there are still 'some' vehicles which unfortunately have problems such as yours. Knock on wood with around 4000 miles on my 2005 I have not experienced any issues. This survey is for 2005's so maybe the first year 2004 models didn't do so well and the electrical bugs have been resolved?

I guess you can take some solac e in knowing that unless you bought a Lexus - any other entry luxury level SUV would have potentially more problems, and at least they are electrical, which should be easier to remedy.
