Does anyone know if I can use 225/45s from the front of my '01 sport package coupe on the 8.5" rear rims (normally 245)?

For reasons too long to relate, I have a spare set of 225s with quite a few miles left on them, and one of the tires on my 8.5"s has a puncture. So I'd like to be able to use the 225s on the rear rims, assuming they aren't going to unseat themselves, rather than shell out $300 for new tires right now.

Yes, the rim width range on most 225/45R17 tires is 7-8.5"

Thanks Gary, I appreciate it. Don't worry, all my car tires come from tirerack, so you will be hearing from me again soon enough... ;)

Edit: the tires are Dunlop SP 9000s - do they fall under the heading of "most" 225s for these purposes?
