I could be in for an Austin meet. From July till mid September I should be free. I'm pretty confident that I'm the only 'fester in San Angelo so I'll piggyback on the Austin or Dallas fun.

Sorry - I don't check the regional forums too often since there are hardly ever any new posts. I'll come long for another ride - the last one was a lot of fun. This time we need to get Hockeynut and DoubleVanos to come :stickpoke

Well for a meeting place, we can always do the Cheesecake factory again. However we might find more open room to park a bunch of cars short term across the street in the TJ Max shopping center (NE corner of Great Hills Trail and Jollyville).
What about the meet time and destination for lunch? We could drive out to the lake to Carlos and Charlies? And does anyone who's coming know how to get to Lime Creek Rd? I've got the directions saved off somewhere but still haven't done the drive myself.

So I imagine that by early afternoon it would be pretty well packed. An alternate location would probably be a good idea.
I thought we had already decided we would be meeting at 2 PM.

Carlos and Charlie's sounds good. I've never been there. After that we can head over to Lime Creek.
If we are concerned about a meeting area. How about an IBM parking lot, or the parking lot next to ROSS and Einstein Bagels on Braker and 183?
Or, just to see the look on the dealer's faces we can all meet at BMW of Austin and check out the new 3 again. :eeps:
Official Time is 2pm. Hangovers and children's doctor's appointments included. :p

I'm a definite for Saturday. Bro in Law and I will be coming from the Northside of Austin if anyone knows good directions to where we are going. Leaving from the neighborhood right across from the big football stadium on Parmer.

If you are coming from Houston, starting from the intersection of IH-35 and Hwy 290:
Go NORTH on IH35, get off at the exit for 183 NORTH (its about a mile or less - big flyover)
Stay on 183 until you get to the exit for BRAKER LN (about 5 miles or so I guess)
Get off and make a RIGHT onto Braker LN. You will see the parking lot right there on your RIGHT (I believe there is an Office Max (or Depot)) right there. That's the place.
I will suggest meet, chat, drive, then eat since those of us with young'uns usually need to eat before 2pm, and an early dinner at Carlos/Charlies is probably a good idea.

Well, I made it home sound and safe, specially with no DPS in sight.
It was good to see some old faces (Hockeynut, Afshwant, Icemanjs4, and the Hockeynut kids) and meet some new faces (Mrs. Hockeynut, DoubleVanos, Robsa and his brother-in-law).
The choice of restaurant was good (CarlosNCharlies) with a great view of the lake and good variety of food choices. The drive out the to restaurant was great in itself, specially for me who lives in flatland TX.
The drive through Lime Creek was great. I know it tested our driving abilities as well as that of our cars. I have taken driving courses but I do not think it helped much. I was mentally hearing my instructor telling me to look down the road and the car would follow me through the curve. Well that did not help when we had 135 degree turns with trees growing to the edge of the pavement and could not even see what was on the other side of curve. :yikes: In drivng school you can also fully use the 2 lanes of the road, not today unless you wanted a head on collision.
Here are my pictures. I was hoping to take more pictures during our actual drive but my batteries died at the beginning of the drive. I had extra batteries but there is no way I was going to change the batteries while trying to drive.

LDV, since you've taken driving courses, maybe you could explain somethign to me.
How the HECK are oyu supposed to take those 135 degree decreasing radius turns that are going downhill part of the way and uphill part of the way?
I assume you brake going into the turn while in 3rd gear. Somewhere along the way you need to switch to 2nd gear. Do you break through the first half of the turn, or only at the beginning? Is there a period where you're coasting with no gas or brake? Etc.
Somehow my approach of brake, coast, brake some more, coast, switch to 2nd and mash the pedal just didn't seem right to me - nor was it smooth.
LDV330i
06-26-2005, 10:35 AM
Rule #1
Never ask your tires to 2 things at the same time: ie. brake hard and turn, punch the gas pedal while turning.
So before coming to a turn you need to downshift, match the revs and speed and go through the turn, and then accelerate.
The same goes for braking, you need to loose enough speed before entering the curve.
You will hear your instructor contantly repeat that you must hit the apex. To be able to do this you must be able see down the road. You also need to use 2 lanes of the road because your are trying to minimze your actual turning of the steering wheel since this scrubs off speeed.
When racing cars or motorcycles, there are many factors to achieving the fastest average lap time and thus winning the race. One of the most important factors is hitting the apex of each turn. There are two key aspects to hitting the apex; the approach and the exit. When entering the turn, your main concern is braking. As you point the nose of the car or motorcycles into the turn, you want to keep your acceleration point inside of a imaginary 25 degree frame off the center on the front of the car. If you brake to hard the acceleration point will move alongside the car or motorcycle (lateral acceleration) on the side furthest from the inner corner and eventually the car or motorcycles will lose traction and spin out. As you move through the turn you want clip the rumble strip with your front (inside) wheel. At this point you have gotten through the first half of the turn. http://web.bentley.edu/students/h/harold1_matt/turn2.gif
Red spot is where you brake. Green spot is the apex. As you can see this was impossible to do yesterday unless you wanted have a head on collision since the turns were blind.
I did my first (High Speed) Driver's Ed (http://www.lsrpca.com/DE/DE.html) at Texas Motor Speedway earlier this Spring which was sponsored by the Porsche Club. They do it every month and it is an all weekend event. Here is an article (http://www.lsrpca.com/DE/Articles/Driving%20Habits%20to%20Lose.pdf)that is very enlightening about the things you will learn during that weekend.
