Just bought myself a 2000 540 M Sport from Houston. Previous owner was original and kept it in the garage.
IPOD, K&N CAI, Magnaflow,
Do all my own maintenance and now am struggling with putting in a new alternator.
Looks simple but it costs an arm and a leg cheapest is 250 , which I guess is not bad could have been 600.
Anybody changed one and have words of wisdom.

I've got 211,000 on my 540 sport and I just replaced the upper chain guide and intake vanos actuator (not the solonoid). Timing this puppy stinks. Without the proper tools, it's impossible. Thank god I'm a Master technicnan! For all you new owners don't overheat them, lookout for the watercooled alternators going at 175-200,000 and of course the upper coolant cover. Get your check engine lights lookd at right away and find a dealer mechanic that does side work. Anyone from Baltimore?

I recently paid $800 for a new after market catalytic converter (a device used to reduce the toxicity of emissions from an internal combustion engine), because it was almost impossible to get the originals. I hope I pass smog with the "CHECK ENGINE" light on.
