Chip, sorry if I'm too late for this - didn't check my inbox lately. I will measure the press kit and I will let you know. You will need 3 different diameters: The big one to receive the ball joint. An intermediate to press it in and a smaller one to press it out. The BMW kit comes with 4 different diameters - not sure what the 4th is for (as of yet). I'm at work right now, but when I come home, I will let you know.

Hi Doru- Getting ready to tackle the ball joint DIY. If possible,,would you measure the inside diameter's of the ball joint tool that you use to do the procedure with. I have quiet a collection of Volvo tools of the same type as the one that you have,,but would like to make sure that I have something ready of make somthing ready before jumping in for this work.
    Thanks

Long story: Changed every single front suspension component and wheel bearings, the crunch was still there. decided to ship the coilovers to Bilstein. They said they tested good (kept them for over 2 weeks!!!), still didn't received them as of today (6th August, sent start of July!!!). I also read that I need those pesky 9/16" grade 8 lock washers which will cure the crunch - there was a long post from 2008, which I stumbled across too late. If those washers won't fix the problem, I will re-do the whole rear end as well.
I just replaced the rear ball joints on the X5, and thank god I have that BMW special tool to remove them. They are identical, same p/n as for the e39, so I know this will be easy. I think I will use Michel's DIY as a guide combined with the Bentley. The rear bearings seem to be a handful.

    Thanks for the heads-up,

    Cheers, Dorin

Hey Doru--Just thought I'd drop a line--back a few weeks ago you were posting about the clunk coming from the front of your car and couldn't figure what was happening. I had the same thing going on and thought mine was coming from the front also--It turned out to be the rear subframe bushings in my car were shot--I changed them about 2 weeks ago and all is well now--but for the life of me I thought the problem was from the front of the car--this problem fooled me--just thought you might be interested in my findings
