Hey smolck did you take out your clear tails? Also are they for sale?

Thanks for the offer. That's very generous. As tempted as I am, I think I will pass for now. I am not quite ready to tackle this yet (wife sort of dampening my mod activities). When I do, I will probably hang on to my original for the same reason as Micah O.

Off to test drive my buddy's '09 750Li twin turbo. Gonna see what 0-6- in 4.6 seconds feels like!! woohoo!

I have my old 3.46 in my garage. It technically belongs to Micah O (he gave me his 3.07's) so if he is ok with it, I'll send you those and you can send him yours. The bottom line is he just wants a spare one for when he sells his car.

took a long road trip today (golf trip) and watched the tach closely. THe difference between 3600 and 3900 is really minimal and happens so quickly, I doubt I would notice. I had it up to 85 a few times and even to 100mph for a short bit and even then, the RPMs weren't annoying though, I doubt I would want to run the car at mid 4000 for long periods. Definitely on the list.

DO you still have your 3:46 ? I thought I read that you swapped it back out.

I think that you will be happy with it. I know my 2nd gear was a beast with the 3.46.

THanks for the input. Of course, you are is a 3.15 in my 5mt not 3.18. According to the calculator in the Wicki, my revs would go from 3,180 at 75mph to 3,493 - just over 300 RPM. It also says I would be at 3,900 at 85 MPH versus 3,600 with a 3.15 so again, about 300 RPM. Not huge but I'll have to play around with my tach and see if I would be comfortable with it. MP gallon doesn't look like an issue really. This is quickly getting to the top of my performance list along with Hotchkis sways.

I didn't know they made a 3.18 rear. Yes, the 3.46 will make 2nd a beast, and 3rd too. Heck, 5th pulled hard. 75mph was about 3500rpm or just under for me. I currently average 85mph on my interstate commute and I am at 3600 so the RPM isn't harmful. Based on what you have said, I'd go for it. For what it is worth, my fuel economy is unchanged.

    Hi Smolck
Hope you don't mind me posting this off-forum but didn't want to engage in a series of "opinions" with the clan.
We shared a thread about swapping the DIff in the E46 (mine is a 325) and the added "grunt" one gets. My question - would putting in a 3:46 to replace my 3.18 rear end actually increase torque and acceleration or does it only result higher RPMs therefore placing one higher in the curve? Most of my driving is in the mountains (hilly and twisty)and even our highways (freeways) are limited to about 75 MPH or less so a couple hundred RPMs won't make too much difference to fuel economy. The car is a pleasure to drive for sure but a stronger 3rd gear would be an asset/pleasure.
