    you can get a code reader or you can do the pedal trick, google both of those things. i dont know much bout code reading cause amazingly my car has never ever thrown a check engine code.

    possibly only a little water got in there and it managed to dry it self out.

    yea early e36s and all early car models have problems, i mean our 92s are the first ones made so you'll find many things are different, no vanos, different strut mounts/sway bar links(on some), etc etc, the most painful thing i have come across is the fuel filter location woo for our 92s it sucks changing it.

    no you shouldnt have to if it isnt to messed up. i took mine out sure enough there was leaves and water in the comparment, so i took the dme out, oppened it up and left it out to dry for a while. put it back in, good as new. i also blocked off the compartment with some silicone and you can also reroute the drains so water does not go there. our early model e36s are kinda poopy for this etc.
