650i - Documented but Missing Features

1. On BMW Website: Mentions Voice Memo, but there is no voice memo.

Voice Command

This system allows you to dial, add or delete stored telephone numbers hands-free. It can also activate numerous navigation system functions and record up to five minutes of notes. The Voice Command button must be pressed before each use, so conversations wont accidentally activate the phone or other systems.

2. In the Owner's Manual: Discusses FM Autostore, but there is no FM autostore (AM autstore only).

AutoStore

Updating stations with best reception If you are on a longer journey and leave the transmission range of the stations originally set, you can update the list of stations with the best reception.

The 650i manual mentions auto dimming headlights, but mine don't when put the switch in the ante clockwise position. Also, I can't seem to get my headlamps to track the turn. That's also in the manual.

There were a few more things in the manual that my car can't do but I'm getting senile and I forgot what they were (didn't write them down, but WTF I couldn't read my handwriting anyway), but I suspect the manual is written by someone from Germany who doesn't realize we don't have all the features they do. And who doesn't understand that the word "principle" means "rule" and the word "principal" means "primary." Dozens of mis-uses of the word made me want to chuck the manual, which is in my opinion piss poor.

The manual doesn't even tell you how to effectively turn the ignition to "position 2" with the fob/button combo. It comes in as an afterthought late in the manual.

Manuals for cheap Japanese electronics are better than the embarassing 650i manual. Will BMW change it? Of course not. They embrace it, incorrect words, mis-identified features and all. (Second year the word "principle" has been mis-used.) Thank God that I'm in this for the car and not the "extras."

High Beam Assistant (Auto dimming headlights as you call it) are not in the US model. High Beam Assistant turns the high beams on and off automatically as on-coming cars approach and pass. I have no idea why they didn't include this feature. It should be offered in a car of this class.

However, Adaptive Headlights (headlamp tracking as you call it) works fine in my 650i. Make sure your light switch is all the way to the LEFT (green LED light will come on near the light switch). It will NOT work if the switch is all the way to the right. Then drive at night on a dark road and weave your car back and forth a bit. You should see the headlight beams moving left and right. If you don't, it's broken. Take it to the dealer for repair.

The adaptive headlights work on the 650i loaner I got too. I know when you park, it only turns when you turn to the right, not when you turn to the left.

My God, I should read my manual.

Yes, but it's only about 60% accurate.

I noticed that when I took a 645Ci test drive. I had the auto lights on (or whatever you call it appropriately), which turn on all lights automatically when in a darker area. Now I was in an underground car park and decided to "test' the adaptive headlights when the car was stationary. Here we have right hand drive cars. I turned the steering left and the adaptive headlights followed left but when I turned the steering right (from centre), the adaptive headlights did not move. Why is this? I thought it was broken.

The manual states, "To avoid blinding oncoming traffic, the Adaptive Head Light is not active when driving in reverse and points toward the passenger side when the vehicle is stopped."

Welcome WuTang... I can still "see" that grin on your face after just receiving your car! :drive:

The "outer" headlight moves up to 15 degrees, the "inner" will go up to 7 degrees..

Ha Ha... Yes... A smile has been firmly planted on my face for a few days now... And as you can see, I have been seriously reading the manual! Ha Ha.. Thanks for the welcome.
