Size of the E70?
Has anyone here have a chance to stand next to an E70 and check out the size of this upcoming SAV? Some people from other forums are saying that this E70 is a lot bigger than the E53. This is a bit worrying.

I saw one driving in LA a few weeks ago. It had camo tape. looked like a big X3. However, it did not look any larger. The links below says it will be a little larger. But we are talking centimeters, not feet. http://www.worldcarfans.com/spyphoto...-x5-spy-photos http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...ticleId=105424 |

Translation, the new X5 is about 7 inches longer. Depending on the bumpers you may never see the difference. |

One of the mag articles I read said that it would be 4.5 inches longer, 2.5 wider and a .5 inch taller. Where are you getting your info?
|
I think BMW has issued a press release which you can find on the bmwusa website.
Tine, any chance of a photo of the E70 standing next to an E53? |
I guess the bigger X5 is probably also heavier. Curb weight - any data?

So E70 is about 200-300 lb heavier. Considering its grwoth in size (7-in longer and 2-in wider), the gain is weight is minimum. But anyway, it's a 5000 lb animal. |
For those who have seen the E70 (mule) in person, do you think visually the E70 is a lot larger than the Merc ML or Audi Q7?
|
Its appeaance looks most similar to Volvo XC90 & Porsche Cayenne. Yet the styling is nicer. Not so bloated as Cayenne's, and not so angular as XC90's.
Mercedes-Benz ML looks much taller & boxish, while Audi Q7 looks (and is) much longer, and a lower - more cossover-ish (more like a HUGE A6 Avant). And, yes - it looks (and indeed is) bigger than E53: especally lenght & width. It appears less box-ish than E53. Also it looks lower - since the proportions are changed (longer, wider, but same height). But do not worry - since similar lines E70 doesn't look alien vs E53. Still I had no hard times mistaking E70 for E53 - the change in styling & size is quite prominent IRL. But definitely not alien! |
I'm still waiting for the US specs on the E70 to appear. I'm still undecided which new vehicle I want from BMW. Owned an E46 for the past 7 yrs and not sure I want another 3 series, thought of the X3 but too much like the E46 inside. Test drove the 2006 X5 and like it now I'm waiting for the 2007 to decide.
Here are the specs from catalog on 2006 model X5 to compare when we get 2007 specs (=auto) 3.0i weight 4652 lbs (4696) lbs wheelbase 111.0 Length 183.7 Width 73.7 Height 67.5 Ground Clearance 8.3 4.4i (same order as above) 4927 111.0 183.7 73.7 67.2 8.0 4.8is (same order as above) 5016 111.0 183.7 73.7 67.2 6.5 In addition same for all 3 above is Shoulder Room F/R 58.0/57.2 Headroom F/R 39.9/38.5 |

Tine, two more questions for you, will you be worried if you are going to buy the initial batch of the E70? Is it better to wait till Jan 07? |

Q7 definitely looks lower than E70. And much longer! Regarding initial bunch: engines are proved since they have been used in other models for quite a long time; suspension is a copy of 7-series' suspension - so it is also proved; xDrive - proved; DTC+: proved - since it debuted in E90 3-series; active steering: proved; HUD: proved; gearbox: proved (debuted in facelifted Z4 3.0si). Since there is almost no completely new tech used in E70, I'm sure the car will have extremely low number of defects. Also BMW's quality control is much more strict today. Like I said: E70 looks like merging Cayenne & XC90 together. E70 have very nice proportions. Especially due bigger width. |
Thanks for the great info. Really can't wait to see the real thing in person. Hopefully they will release the brochure soon.
I didn't know the latest Z4 already uses the advanced steptronic gearbox. Wow. |
