BMW Engines book, BMW M Power book...
Does anyone know if the BMW Engines book (the two volume set sold by BMW) includes the S54?
Does anyone know if the BMW M Power 30th Anniversary Edition book (also sold by BMW) includes the S54 powered M Coupes? Thanks. |

Ron,
The engine book is... 01 09 0 027 478 or 01 09 0 027 479 The two numbers I think are because there is a standard edition and a deluxe edition. The M Power book was... 99 00 0 003 296 I say "was" because that was the previous edition. The current one, just released I gather, is the 30th Anniversary edition of "BMW M Power". Thanks. |
I tried my BMW parts place first. Both books are available through them. They don't know what is covered though.
I asked BMWNA and they don't know either and said to contact my dealer. Unlike Radio Shack, they don't have answers. I called BMWonline 1-888-269-6654 and they said neither book covers the S54 engine. I agree with them on the engine one since it covers through 2000. Not sure on the M power one. Will order one Monday to see. The Engine book luxury version 01 09 0 027 478 retails for $295. The standard version retails for $169. The M power one 99 00 0 003 296 retails for $60. BMWonline is selling at retail. My parts guy will discount them. |
Thanks.
I agree that the engines book probably doesn't cover the S54 (although I was hopeful it might since even the 2000 M Brochure had pics of the E46 M3). The M Power Book is supposed to be a new revised edition covering 1972-2002 (the previous edition is at least a couple of years old). So I expect that it will cover S52 and S54 powered E36/7-8s and E36/E46 M3s. If not it won't be much of a revised edition and certainly not worthy of claiming "2002" in its title. After all we are at the end of the second model year of cars with S54s, even allowing for editing and printing lead times. I look forward to your thoughts on the book. It is a "coffee table" type so it may be more pictures than specs and I don't expect a narrative history of BMW Motorsports either. |
Here's an ebay listing with pics of the 30th anny M Power book. It shows pics of the CSL, so I'd think that ///M Rakete is correct.

They have a second one going now. Currently at $50 with no bids:
M Power Book 2 |
If he gets $80.00 again I'm going to have to start ebaying them as well.
|
Looks like Brett Anderson selling them.

Ordered the M Power book today from South Motors. They used to stock the old version. Hopefully, I end up with the new version.
|
Just got a hold of the new version...
It appears to add coverage of the E46 M3, M3 Cabriolet, and M3 CSL. The only S54 motor picture I saw in my quick review was of a chromed set of exhaust headers (Euro spec which is true of everything in the book it seems).
As for the M Roadster and M Coupe it mentions a revised specification as of March 2001 which inlcudes the M3 motor and DSC. That is about it. They even goofed on the M Coupe specification entry titling it E36/7 (as opposed to E36/8). Still a very nice book but certainly not the final source for S54 based cars. It really is a coffee table book and as such is fine. |
An up to date Engine book is what we need.

Hey We S52 people have rights
Hows this book for our engines? Is this a technical book, with Illustrated parts and repair procedures? or is this a photo essay?
|
Photo essay aptly describes it.

Sorry, the BMW M Power book is a "photo essay".
The BMW Engines books are very thorough and technical. As you said we need a revised edition that covers the S54. |
dont know if this helps you all or not but i found this m// book on ebay and it says up to 2002

I'll have to take a more thorough look but I don't recall seeing anything really different. It's a nice book especially if you're interested about all the M cars and the writeups on various race car drivers and by press people isn't bad either.
If you want a history of the Z3 with some degree of technical narrative you'll want "Z Cars" by James Taylor. If you want the gospel as it were you'll want one of the press information CDs or dealer sales handbooks. I've seen the one for the E46 M3 and it is spectacular. I don't know if there was ever anything similar for Z3s. |

I have the '95 through '02 Fast Facts books. You can get them from a salesperson or sales manager if you have a good relationship with them. I had extras, but they are long gone like my salesman. What years are you interested in? I have people that just send me things. If I get some, I'll save them for you. |
