DME burnt out 95 bmw 325i

My DME burnt out due to an electrical malfunction, can I purchase a used DME for my E36 and do an even swap? Or do I have to get a new one the dealership since I was told that the DME's are married to each specific car and you cant do a swap? Dunno if thats true but I need help ASPAP!

You can use a used one just fine. Just be sure you get the right model. Look at the numbers on your old DME and see what the numbers are. Go to realoem.com and check your month and year so you get the right one. Most are 413 DME boxes....

The new DMEs get married. The older ones like yours do not.

at what year is this the case? i have a 2002 325TI that needs the DME replaced.

BMW want to charge me 3k to do this, after already charging me 1200 to change the ems which they originally thought was the problem:mad:

so can i use a second hand one? and is it hard to replace yourself?

thanks
