Any DIYs on repairing gear stick?

I wanna recondition my mbadged gearstick, in a sense that the black background behind the numbers has faded. How do i get to it? How does the stick come off, and so on. Tried to see some threads here on it, but found nothin... :dunno:

To get the stock gear-knob off you just need to pull it upwards VERY VERY hard

Get in the back seat if you need more leverage and be careful not to hit the rear view mirror or, worse, yourself in the face!!

thats an easy DIY. :)

If u manage to get the actually stick looking good again post some pics..been contemplating doing mine as its faded abit and the illumination on the numbers seems abit dim..prob just needs a bleeding good clean inside!!

Illumination???

Are these 'stock' //M badges?

Well mines an m sport so i have all the m body kit, badges, m suspension, m interior (seats and steering wheel etc) which includes the m gear stick which lights up same as the dash and switches and stuff... u musta seen it before?

Oh, ok...
Mine comes off pretty easy when you lift it and I thought it was stuffed. The knob it a bit loose and moves around on the shaft. (I'm sure there's a comment coming there...)
I read somewhere you need to take the cover off and undo grubscrews.

Heh, I shift into 4th hard an mine comes flying off LOL

One of the little plastic retainers on the inside has broken off.

oh just too easy!!!!!
:jack: :lmao:

U tried just sticking abit of electrical tape or similar around the shaft (here we go again!!) and jamming the knob back on (ohhh it gets worse!!) Might be enough to make it abit more solid??
Failing that a doctor might be able to help ;)

You can get cream that will clear that right up :)

I just wondered if its possible to remove the top part where the numbers are WITHOUT removing the knob itself.

I'd have said yes coz u can buy the replacement numbered bit..but how I have no idea, I have a quick look but never really studied it..

Most likely you can pry it apart with a very thin flat-head screwdriver. Just be careful not to scratch anything.

I'd like an illuminated one without the ///M but I suppose they don't exist!

oakley 08-12-2007 08:28 AM

hummm probably not..spose u could pull the top off and replace it with a non m one if u can find on that still lets the light through.. will be a lot of hassle though, and they arent cheap to buy as a retro fit from what iv heard...

320what? 08-12-2007 10:17 AM

i think there was DIY for making your gear stick illuminated but it doesnt really bother me...

Pirate_copy 08-12-2007 10:47 AM

I took mine off to get at the screw before i knew i needed to just pull it off

Ruined the plastic top though.....

320what? 08-12-2007 12:14 PM
