What do you make of this ?

1994 E36 S50 for $1850  Is it a deal or a money sink ?

Money sink. With fluid in the cylinder, that thing blew good. I'd be reluctant to even try to repair that engine, and just swap in a new one. So price a new S50 motor plus labor, and it to the cost. Also, keep in mind that its just a 318i so it won't have the performance of a real M3.

 Some uprgrades beside the motor and I'm looking at it from a DIY tech standpoint. A new HG and some time would be a small price. I could easily spend $2K buying a solid S50 longblock :dunno:

Oh, from DIY standpoint, if you can do all the work yourself and not in any hurry, then sure. If you're sure you can get a good S50 longblock for that price, and can install it on your own, sure. But if you repair this one, I'd see problems ahead without a full rebuild.

But even as a DIY, you're still better off swapping engines and using the other one as parts.

Absolutely. Just saying that I wouldn't even trust the engine for a few hundred miles if it wasn't fully rebuilt. But a new engine would obviously be better.

i wouldnt trust it as far as i can throw it.
