E28 M535 Seized up

Hi,

My aunt has a 1986 E28 M535 on her driveway, not in great condition and has been sitting for about two years. She tells me that it is seized up and that it wont start. Just wondering if anyone can give me a list of things that i can try and do to get the car started and running?

Thanks, Alex

If it overheated really badly, you can throw away the engine and get a used one. Probably head is very warped and/or cracked. If it were a 528e I would say the timing belt broke and there are some bent valves and piston damage but this is an M30 engine that uses the timing chain and to be honest with you I don't know if they do break.

Good Luck!!

Hi, thanks for the reply. I think the engine was ok, not overheated and worked fine before it was parked and then not used for a long time...

An overheated engine that seizes will usually restart after cooling. If this one is seized from sitting it's because the rings are stuck.
Pull out the spark plugs and try turning it by hand. Put penetrating oil like PB Blaster in the cylinders and let it work for a day or two, keep adding more and working the motor by hand. Unless the thing filled a cylinder with water it will break loose. Once free turn it over by hand until it's loose again using lots of oil. Spin it over with the starter to blow as much of the oil out before reinstalling the plugs and attempting to start it.

1. Your aunts definition of seized maybe different than ours.

2. Id start with getting good power and make sure the starter turns.

Thanks for the replies.
Yeah, i'm not sure how it has seized and she isn't particularly mechanically minded so i'm not sure.

I'll try these suggestions and see what happens. The starter turns ok but the engine does not start...

Ok. Than its not seized.

You'll want to check your spark, fuel, and good intake air.

ah ok, i'll check sparks and all that and see what happens
thanks

Probably not a bad idea to replace the main and fuel pump relays, remove and clean al fuses. If you get spark and fuel but no start then you might have a dead ECU. Go here and follow the troubleshooting steps:

Its for an e24 but it still works.

Good Luck!
