135i Race Car Project Thread

Hi All -

I'm very excited to finally announce something we've had in the works now for months:

Total Lubricants USA and Nitto Tires are teaming up to have us race the 135i in BMW Club Racing. The car will begin it's racing career in the H-Stock class with our veteran driver Ralph Warren pursuing class track records in the new car.

This will be our 3rd year working with Nitto Tires and our first venture with Total Lubricants. The car will be racing on the Nitto NT01 DOT-R competition tire and using Total race fluids.

We've been racing in BMW Club Racing since the 2004 season, winning numerous regional and national championships and setting over a dozen class track records. We currently campaign the Crevier BMW/Nitto Tire e46 M3, but are looking forward to taking on the challenge of being the pioneers for racing the BMW 135i.

Bimmerfest.com wil be among the other sponsors displayed on the car. Other sponsors will be named later as agreements are reached.

The car we'll start with is a 135i with nothing put Sport Package. We picked up the car from Crevier on Friday, April 25th. Judy Ray, who is also runs Driving Concepts driving and race schools, is an outstanding Client Advisor and long time BMW enthusiast. A great BMW family member to get a car from.

Thanks - we hope do to as well a job or even better on this car if possible.

So, let's get to it. :)

What's the first thing every person should do when they bring a new BMW home that night? We wouldn't know - we jacked it up, pulled the wheels off and pull out the front and rear brake pads so we could measure them and pass that on to brake pad vendors.

BTW, the car is beautiful underneath - best BMW I've had so far in that regard.

As usual, higher res in my photo gallery:

Crevier BMW is by far the best dealership in SoCal! I bought my first two Bimmers from them. Glad to hear that they partnered up with this great project.

So cool! Can't wait to check the car out in person this Saturday!

See you soon Scott!

This is awesome, I can't wait for more :)

Congratulations, looking good!

I talked to a One Lap of America racer campaining a 135i and he's had limp mode about 9 laps in. He has AA power mods, DP and Performance Braking brakes - so the car is very fast.

I'm curious if you guys will face the same problem, and what your solution will be...

wag-zhp 04-29-2008 07:22 PM

This will be a great thread to keep an eye on! Good luck!

I'm sure we're in for some challenges and a learning curve. This is certainly my first turbocharged car. We are keeping our ears and eyes open on what is either currently available or coming in the aftermarket to help keep these cars running better. From the people I've talked to (Steve Dinan, Harold at HP Autowerks, etc.), it's not hopeless.

But we've got lots of time to work with this car and we'll gradually get the car to where it needs to be.

This is the car "adc" is referring to campaining in the One Lap of America.

Drivers include James Clay from the BimmerWorld team (Speed Touring Series).

I had seen that - that car should actaully be faster. They can do a lot more performance modifications than we'll be allowed. But our car should unique in it's own way as well.

scottn2retro 05-02-2008 09:51 PM

We'll see you all at Bimmerfest tomorrow as the car will be at the Borla exhibit with a prototype Borla exhaust and a KW suspension.

I drove an incredible 135 at BMW performance center

Three weeks ago I was at the BMW performance center and was given an opportunity to drive a car modified by the BMW team at an event. They did not tell us all the mods done to the car but I know it had performance exhaust, racing wheels and tires, cold air intake, ground effects, hot chip. I also drove the new M3 and honestly on a slallom course I think the 135 would put up a great fight! We were given several competitors cars to drive on the course as well and there was no competition. This car pinned you back in the seat like no car I have ever driven. I can't wait to hear how this car turns out!

We've heard good things about the 1 - hope they are all true. :bigpimp:

Hi All -

I've got some filling in to do on this story, but the good news is we manage to debut the new 135i race car in this past weekends BMW Club Races at Willow Springs.

We'll be at the Buttonwillow event in July hosted by the San Diego chapter - you going to be there?

cosmos 06-04-2008 12:12 PM

So, let me get this straight....

You guys finally figure out all the bugs with the SMG and now have dived headfirst into a bigger nightmare with the Turbo 135...*****; you guys must really be into S&M.

I wihs you the best of luck!!

Hehe, we like to be trail blazers :D

The funny thing is, the thing we were worried about most (the car going into 'limp home' mode) never happened once all weekend.

What didn't last at WSIR was the left front tire. We only had 225/40x18s on the front and with virtually no camber, the outside edge of the left front pretty much melted off the car. Look closely in this pic

How do you think it will hold in Phoenix this July?

Luckily, we have yet to have a BMW Club race scheduled at PIR for July (and if we did, I'd probably skip it).

As soon as they are available, we'll get the Dinan software (which will help with the water pump) and their oil cooler.

Hi All -

Well, I finally have some time to do some catching up on this thread.

All hi res build-up pics are in this album:
http://www.bimmerfest.com/photos/sho...at/3257/page/1

Where to begin? Well, to race a car, you have to have a roll cage

http://www.bimmerfest.com/photos/dat...m/PICT2330.JPG

http://www.bimmerfest.com/photos/dat...m/PICT2331.JPG

http://www.bimmerfest.com/photos/dat...m/PICT2332.JPG

You need a fire system

http://www.bimmerfest.com/photos/dat...m/PICT2334.JPG

You need a racing seat, harnesses and a center net
http://www.bimmerfest.com/photos/dat...m/PICT2338.JPG

You need some kind of suspension and alignment - we're running a KW Variant street kit at this time to lower the car and help handling

http://www.bimmerfest.com/photos/dat...019_resize.JPG

http://www.bimmerfest.com/photos/dat...031_resize.JPG

http://www.bimmerfest.com/photos/dat...037_resize.JPG

You'll need wider wheels and R-compound tires. We'll start with BBS CHs and of course, Nitto NT01s
