Z3: wheel fitment question
 
Hi all, it's been a while since I posted in this forum.

I just picked up a '97 Z3 2.8 after being without a Z3 for a little over 6 years. I also happen to have a set of 8x17 and 8.5x17 wheels (original sport package setup from my E90 325i) that are sitting in the storage shed gathering dust. Does anyone know if those wheels will fit on the Z3?

If no one knows I'll probably test fit them to see if they work, but I thought I'd check here first.

Need to know the offset to be sure. Should be molded in or otherwise marked on the wheels
IIRC stock offset for Z3's is 41

daven is correct. Stock 17"s on a non-M Z3 have an offset of 41mm on all four wheels.

Assuming that the wheels from your E90 325i sport package are Style 161

Z3 fronts: 7.5" wide; et 41
325i fronts: 8.0" wide; et 34
Difference: Inner Clearance = +1mm; Outer edge = +13mm (roughly 1/2 inch).

Z3 rears: 8.5"; et 41
325i rears: 8.5"; et 37
Difference: Inner Clearance = +4mm: Outer edge = +4mm (roughly 1/6 inch).

[ "+" in this case means shifting away from the centerline of the car; e.g. engine/driveshaft. ]

This is all based on the assumptions that these are the 325i wheels that you have and that the ones currently on your Z3 are 17x7.5"f and 17x8.5"r, which are very common.

That's them. The wheels currently on my Z3 are 7x16 5 spokes with 225/50 16 tires.

The sizes seem close enough for me to at least bolt them up to see how they look. I'll need new tires, partly because the rears I've got are worn out and partly because they're 255/40 17.

Here's a shot of the car with the wheels test fitted to the passenger side. Please excuse the quality of the picture; I used a disposable camera.

The fronts completely fill the wheel wells, but do not scrape anywhere. The rears fit without any problems, even though the tire size is 255/40R 17.

Wow, back from the dead... :)

They worked out fine. I drove the car with the E90 setup for a month, then bought a new set of BF Goodrich g-Force Sport A/S tires. At that time I changed the back tires to 245/40 size which is correct for a Z3.

Drove it for 3 years/15k miles before I sold it to someone else. I never had any problems with the setup and they seemed to wear quite well. However, since I sold the car over a year ago I really can't say what it's like now.

I don't think that rear wheel and tire setup is going to fit under the 1.9's narrower rear fenders. Here are some more pictures to help you visualize:

Are these with the 245s or the 255s in the back? Did you need to lower the car to make it look right? The pictures look pretty good in my opinion.

Thanks! In the inside pictures, the rear tires are BF Goodrich g-Force Sport A/S, size 245/40ZR 17. The suspension is all original (at the time, 14 years and 101k miles). It may have settled/sagged slightly, but it had not been lowered.

Kevin, I picked up the style 161 wheels and tires and I think they look amazing on the Z. Why did you go from the 255s to the 245s? My 255s are almost new so I don't really want to change them unless there is something I'm not aware of. Pictures coming soon.

It was a last minute decision. My 255s were worn out (like that when I put them on) and I needed to get new tires. The tire guy asked me if I wanted to stick with the 255s or switch to the 245s, which were listed as the correct size for a Z3. Since I was buying tires anyway, I decided to go with the correct size.

If my 255s had not been worn out, I would not have bothered replacing them.

Yeah, I agree but it looks better than it did. I have a vanos and shift pin repair in line ahead of the suspension. Not sure I want to give up the little bit of comfort in the ride.

How bad are your vano seals and shift pins? Unless they are really bad, I'd go suspension, vanos, and then shift pins.

I did the vano seals at 122k and TC Kline SA coilovers at 96k. SA's are a transformational change. Both ride and handling are greatly improved. By far the biggest bang for mod I've done.

The vanos seals were a solid improvement, well worth the money, but not a transformational change.

Fortunately, my shift pins are tolerable. Just need to shift slowly and carefully until the transmission oil is warmed up.

Wheels look good. Separately, what brand nose mask is on the car? Looking to get one just for an occasional long distance drive.

Doug,

Well, I have more time than money right now and I figure the vanos and shift pin repairs are pretty cheap compared to shocks, springs, mounts and any other parts that need to be replaced when you lower a car.

I believe its the same brand as the one pictured by amancuso. It doesn't have the cut-out for the emblem like I have seen on others.

LOL yeah. I basically use mine when I'm on long interstate highway trips.
