Oxygen sensor replacement question
 

Does anyone know if the physical sensors are interchangeable?

My dealership does not stock the piece for the pre-cat cyl 4-6 sensor, which has a very long lead on it (~900 mm). If the actual sensor is interchangeable though, I can merely splice the wires onto one of the other sensors with a shorter lead.

As an additional point, possibly of interest, the retail price quoted for the 750mm lead-equipped sensor was ~$250, while the post-cat sensors with a shorter lead retail for ~$149. It sounds like one expensive run of wires!

I asume for a S52. The 990 mm one is 11 78 1 437 943. The 660 mm one is 11 78 1 406 981. Both retail for $133.35 each.

Thank you, Ron. The price has increased slightly - the dealer quoted ~$146. With my brother's shop price it came to $109. This solved the oxygen sensor heater problem for me and the car runs great again.

That is correct. The $133.35 came from my June '99 BMW price book.
My June '03 Mitchell book shows it at $146.00.

I have a air/fuel gauge I want to tie into the O2 sensor. I have not traced the wire back to the engine compartment yet but I'm betting you have. From the wire lengths in your post... is the connector run all the way back to the ECM in the engine compartment with no breaks or connections in between?
