2011 Tow Hitch

Has anyone installed tow hitch on 2011? Cost? Plesae post a picture if you have installed one.

Kidfree 05-18-2010 10:01 AM

I just posted another thread on this. I should have looked to see this one first. We just were informed our vehicle is in but the dealer told us the hitch is on backorder and they won't have it until the middle of June. Anyone know if these are out yet for the 11's?

jdibber 05-18-2010 10:09 AM

I called PDC, they didn't have a part number for the hitch and it would cause delays. This was about two weeks ago. Price quoted was $700 installed.

Kidfree 05-18-2010 10:29 AM

I wonder if the hitch is the same as the 2010 but just need to cut the bumper different? The insert to put in the bumper cut is separate from the hitch but I don't think I am going to mess with this. What I will do is negotiate with the dealer to come down on the crazy price they quoted us when we bought. I am going to tell them that I want it installed for cost since it was part of the contract and they did not let me know they could not do it until the car actually was sitting at the dealer ready for pick up. It is not looking like we will have ours installed soon but hopefully we will be able to save a few bucks. Bummer.

It is probably on its way on cargo ship from China, on the same container with side view cameras........! :)

It confuses me that BMW won't put a hitch on from the factory, but will pre-wire it.

Why not just have 2 bumpers? They do it for the M-Sport, etc..

Just seems like they don't want customers to actually TOW anything, but like to give the idea away that it has the capability. :eeps:

I know little what I speak of but you would think that the X5 design folks would know that since it can haul 6000 lbs "lets make it easy for everyone involved and have a hitch design with NO cutting involved" or at least have it "hitch ready" for those that have a use for it.. Of course that would make them go further and think about window problems, battery problems, RFT problems and a host of other well known issues that do not change over years of failures. I ' just saying.....

I have one on order, lol

ECSTunningJoe:

Mfg Part# 71602156525 is 2007-10 part number. 2011 has a different bumper and we assume the tow hitch is different.

It could be the same hitch that is needed, but like you said, the bumper changed - inserts will likely change with the new model..

There was a bulletin last weekend that told the dealers that the trim piece for 2011 bumpers would not be available until late June. I don't believe there is any change in the hitch itself so it should be possible to install the hitch sooner and get the trim piece later.

IMO, it is to avoid the regulatory and legal exposure that comes with a tow vehicle- they'd need to test and certify the towing capacity, GVWR, CGVWR, etc, etc.

They would rather let people take the liability for towing on themselves.

It would be nice if this hitch were available in the US. I saw it in an accessory catalog that has 2010 in its address, but has to be a 2011 because it shows the 2011 wheels and LED coronas: http://www.bmw.com/com/en/newvehicle..._catalogue.pdf And, of course its international because of the bmw.com address and, well, the LED coronas...

This one is nice because there isn't a bumper cut. What do you think it is about this one that makes it not "US worthy"?

trkjunkie 05-20-2010 09:13 AM

I would say not working with US trailers would be a bit of a feature flaw. :)

After initially being told that we could not get the hitch until late June the dealer did get it's hands on one. I told them that if they could not get us a hitch until late June/early July that they we would not pay for labor even if it was not thier fault. My rationale is that our contract said that we would have our vehicle with the hitch in May. Our CA really is good and she got us a hitch by calling her contact at BMW. She told us it will be there on Monday and we are to pick up our vehicle on Tuesday. She was a bit amazed when I asked her if she was going to tell me that we will have to come back when the trim piece is available. She did agree that they will be putiing in the hitch/wiring and only cutting big enough to fit it for now. They have the dimensions for the new cutout even though it is not available and will cut the bumper to fit the trim piece once that comes in. It may not look perfect for the first month or two but at least we will have the hitch on. :)

Kidfree 05-22-2010 05:52 PM

Yes, knew it was too good to be true. Dealer said no can do the hitch this week. Now that we went out and bought a $5,000 utility trailer to move things to our vacation home Memorial Day weekend and planning to get 1000 miles in before towing to at least partially break in the 35d we are SOL. After I was bitching up a storm in the background while my wife was on the phone to our CA (good cop bad cop routine) the manager called us back and told us they would find us a vehicle that could tow our trailer next week. They did not currently have anything on the lot but he said he would find us something for the weekend. OK, so if they do that then we can live with it. This would give us plenty of time to break in the X5 before we actually have to tow something over the 4th of July. He also said they would get a hitch on within 2 weeks. We will see, he is supposed to call us back Monday morning and give us the details.

the 2010 hitch does not fit the 2011 x5 & it is much more than trim pieces.both the elec connector & the reciever are placed too high on the 2010 hitch. i know from experience!

Another Update....

I spoke to PDC Rep. and tow hitch is back ordered until mid-July. The will not be installing the tow Hitch at my scheduled delivery date of 6/21 (PDC pickup). :thumbdwn:

h-baum 06-02-2010 01:17 PM

The dealer installed a 2010 x5 hitch on my 2011 x5 and there was some trimming of the rear valance (both matt black panel & silver cover below). the silver panel is now two pieces and the silver horizontal band visible standing behind vehicle runs just above the midline of the rubber receiver cover. With the included rubber cover removed, the surface of the receiver opening projects only 1/4" beyond the horiz. silver band making the hitch almost flush with the fascia. If i keep this set-up, i will install a silver stripe of waste silver vinyl to a thinner pvc hitch cover to continue the line. the chain loops are recessed as well giving the 2010 hitch a very flush & minimal appearance. The elec. plug requires more clearance because its cover swings upward & must be opened greater than 90 degrees to insert the plug. i have about 90 degree swing on mine right now but not messing with it until i have to insert a plug. i'm just using a bike carrier now & BMW is installing the 2011 trim for me when it's available. fyi, the fascias can be easily cut cleanly with a sharp matt knife after the silver panel is removed from the black. the plastic is the same consistency/material as a rubbermaid tote. For those who must have a hitch now, this may be a viable route & may end up being a more aesthetic choice than what the BMW boys come up with. BMW assured me the 2010 hitch is identical and only the trim is to be modified.

So where is the pictures posted?

skibum1 06-09-2010 09:48 AM

Hitch

Yeah please post them if available. I'm in the same boat. Had my 2011 X5 for about 2 weeks now. Still so friggin annoyed that this car doesnt come equipped with a hitch. For 60k thats the least they can do. I tried putting a nice Yakima roof rack accross the railbars up top but the wind noise due to the large sunroof was just unbearable. Returned it. All I want to do is throw a couple of mtn bikes on the car and hit the trails! UGH! My hitch is a month on backorder now. What the frigg??!!!!!!!

h-baum 06-09-2010 01:27 PM

i will e-mail photos if you'll give me your e-mail address. my e-mail is happybaum@aol.com. i'm not computer savvy enough to get them on this site.
