iPhone 4 & smartphone integration cradle

So the new iPhone 4 does not fit on the 3g/3GS cradle on my 2010 750.
How long before BMW comes out with a new cradle? (I know the new iPhones just started arriving yesterday).

I look at the cradle and I am considering using a file tool to modify the front so that the iPhone 4 fits - May work.

As a temporary workaround I am using an iPhone dock extension cable. Sold at Amazon for $19.70 USD.
Here is the link if anyone needs this:

At least the iOS 4 syncs as before via Blue Tooth

Great phone, horrible service on AT&T. I wonder if my droid will fit.

Have you heard anything or have you modified your cradle yet? I have the new iPhone 4 too and haven't called my delaer yet.

For now I am using the extension cable. I doubt the dealers know anything yet.
Have not tried to modify this yet.

We got 2 new iPhone 4 on the 24th! I personally like my 3G S much better, and am going to return the iPhone 4, and keep using my 3G S. I like the feel & shape MUCH better on the 3G, and I like that it fits my almost $200 adapter I already have in my 750. Also, I think the new iPhone 4 looks and feels like a generic Samsung. The square edges, are IMO, dated and ick! I love my iPhone 3g S, and besides from video to video chat (which require wifi!!!!) and a somewhat clearer screen, the iPhone 4 looks and feels like a step back. Don't shoot me...just my opinion :)

Hey, my first reaction too! Apple are marketing geniuses in my opinion!

Interesting however that they told me that many of the people upgrading do not have the 3GS but just have the 3G. The 3G is very slow with the new 4.0 software so if you have a 3G the upgrade to the new phone is a good idea. I have the 3GS and I am wondering what I am going to do with the new phone.

My preliminary thoughts are stick it in the cradle and use it there and carry the new iphone with me when out of the car. The two numbers will be a pain. :(

iPhone 4 crade

Asked the dealer today - guys in parts had no clue.

So i use the cable. Have considered filing down the 3GS cradle but probably won't ever get to to.

BTW, the iPhone 4 rocks! No i don't work for Apple...

I too asked my SA. No clue.
I also like the iPhone 4. I have not had issues so far and love the screen. I am using the extension cable too. I wander if the external antenna connects via the cable PINS or needs contact with the cradle.

My lease will probably end (2 years) or the new iPhone will be out before they develop the cradle.

hammadurb 07-02-2010 09:59 PM

I ended up just using the other cable that came with the car and took out the iphone cradle (listing it on ebay soon). The other cable works just fine but I do miss the cradle, although, I don't have to remove the case to make it fit in the cradle. The cable should come with the car, but if you don't have it, you can find it on ebay.

I am getting ready to ditch this iphone 4. Way to many dropped calls. We will give it a month to see if they can come up with some fixes.

Initially...
"Apple has ,finally, admitted that the new iPhone 4 has some signal problems and it occurs when someone put his hand on the steel hand. The problem lies in the antenna that is integrated to the stainless steel and is wrapped around the iPhone4."

Then...
"After a week of complaints and problems with the reception on the iPhone 4, Apple has finally admitted to a fault. Apple has posted an open letter on its website, but is saying the problem is a software fault and not the hardware. The problem is caused by an algorithm used to calculate the bars of signal reception. Apple has promised a software patch in the coming weeks that will use a new formula. This will not improve reception but will be more accurate in showing the real signal strength. The formula was originally suggested by AT&T."

First Mr. Jobs insults our intelligence by telling us how to hold a damn phone. Then they change their story by claiming the reception issue is a software bug, however, the fix won't improve reception and drop calls. What's the point of the fix? :thumbdwn:.

Same thing that happened with Toyota. Instead of fixing the problem, they played the blaming game and implemented false fixes that had nothing to do with the problem untill people starting losing their lives.

I guess when you have no competition for your product, you can treat your customers anyhow because they'll continue to buy the product regardless. Maybe, maybe, Apple will start having some respect for their customers when we ditch their iPhone...but what's the alternative???

Don't hold your breath on a cradle or even full integration for the iPhone 4. The cradle for the 3Gs came out maybe 6 months after the phone was available. I filed down the top of my 3Gs cradle a little and it works fine. A tight and not perfect fit but it was a tight fit before. The 4G works fine in my car but not as an iPod (external device). Probably a software incompatibility but no way to know.

jagass 07-03-2010 06:58 PM

You can't do anything but wait for it. I think it isn't an issue if you will not put your phone in the cradle for sometime. lol

Am I doing something wrong? If I plug my iPhone into the dock I get the extra antenna boost and blue tooth works great. BUT if I want to use my iPod on my iPhone I have to plug it into the iPod Y adapter. Us this right. You can't control the iPod function when docked as a phone?

I assume you have smartphone intergration because you have the dock. I am able to use the iPod function of my iPhone when plugged into the dock and it all shows up on the iDrive.

That's correct. It's stupid.

Hayden, I do not understand why you are saying that is correct. I can use all functions of the iPhone from the cradle including the music.

Is this not your experience?

With my 2011 ActiveHybrid7 I can NOT. It doesn't show under the "iPod" section

same issue here

asaseaban 07-15-2010 06:15 PM

In order to use the iPod function via the iDrive, it must be plug into the iPod Y adapter and not the smart phone cradle. This is for the iPod function only.

That really stinks. Can't use the external antenna and iPod finctionality at the same time. Now that is a flaw in my otherwise awesome car

there's your reason to get the 2011 7er so you don't deal with this mess

Well by the way it IS a 2011 AcitveHybrid7. So it's not a 2010 & < only issue. I have the latest updates and software and GPS available for the 2011 line of 7ers.

My initial reaction to the "4" was that I much preferred the 3Gs, but that's all changed after several weeks of owning and using the iPhone4. I respect your opinion, but I'm here to tell you that the 4 is what every other smart phone maker will be chasing.

I disagree. The iPhone 4 hardware design is the best mobile phone hardware out there but Palm WebOS is the best mobile Operating System bar none. Not sure how many phone manufacturers will follow iPhone 4 design given all the problems/issues it's having (why could'nt the designers and engineers put those two antennas at the top right and left of the phone instead of the bottom:dunno:)

I applaud Steve Jobs for what he did for then Apple Computers (bringing it back from near collapse), what he did with PIXAR (sorry George Lucas...you should've think long term), and what he has done so far with Apple Inc (iPhone, iPad, iOS, etc) but he really screwed up on the iPhone 4.

I understand his decision to unveil the iPhone 4 earlier (due to the GIZMODO leak) but he should have listen to the engineers that told him the iPhone 4 was not ready for prime time.

Steve Jobs claims there's a flaw in how iOS 4 calculate the signal bars but i think that is a lie. iPhone 3/G/S users complaint a lot about fewer signal bars and dropped calls...guess what Apple did??? They changed the calculation to LIE and show you more signal bars even though the actual bars could be two or fewer. This backfired and now iPhone 4 users are complaining of more dropped calls than ever before. People are seeing 4 bars on their iPhone 4 but yet, they have poor signal or the calls drop.

I'm not even gonna dive into the iPhone 4 proximity sensor issue :bigpimp:.

It happened to GM. Toyota recently went through it and i won't be surprise to see Apple next. What these execs fail to realize is that when your product is/are number one, that is not the time to cut corners and produce any half ass product because you know people will buy it anyway. Integrity and quality go hand-in-hand.

I like the iPhone design especially the steel band and i think it's retarded i have to put a stupic "bumper" or "cover" on it just to have a good signal. I'm returning for a full refund. Hopefully, next year Apple will redesign a better iPhone and also allow Verizon or another carried to carry the iPhone product line and end these AT&T + iPhone dropped calls saga.

The iPhone 4 design and iOS 4 was great but how good is a product if it fails to deliver and sustain it's core function?:thumbdwn:
