2011 X5 Towing Capacity
I have a 2011 X5 35i - great car thus far.
Once the hitch comes in (story for another post) - curious how much towing capacity the group things can actually be towed. I have a boat with dry weight of 4600+ trailer - do you think I'd be safe to trailer behind the car? Is it a factor of the ability to tow (power) or the actual towing capacity of the vehicle (suspension, etc).
Thanks for your input!
Congratulations on your new vehicle. You can safely and easily tow your boat. However there is a minor issue that I am struggling with it as we speak. I cannot find the required hitch for my 2011 X5 xDrive 50i. It seems the vehicle rushed into the market without the part available. There are at least two issues as I understand. The dealer can't find the required trim panels for rear bumper. So I can't install a 2010 hitch just for my bike rack. The second issue seems to be with programming the electronics. The following is the reply from BMW:

Thank you for contacting BMW Canada.
As of right now we do not have an approximate release date for the X5 Hitch.
There is a software issue, that the trailer lights cannot be turned on (recognized by the vehicles electrical system) and until that is resolved by BMW Engineers, we do not have an approximate fix date.
BMW Retailers are aware of this and they will be updated as soon as the issue is resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I have seen posts here that the trim is available in some dealerships. I have yet to find the name and the location.
I hope this helps you.
