Considering a 03 and an 04 BMW X5 3.0
The 2003 has 84,000 miles and they want 15,500.
The 2004 has 70,000+ miles and they want 17,000.

Curious as to the reliability and function of these years? Are they good daily drivers? I drive about 120 or so miles per week mostly on highway, but it does have traffic. Next year I'm out of NYC back to the suburbs, but this year I am a little concerned.

Are they pretty decent? Or should I look at something else? I want to be under 17,000. I am not interested in the 4.4i, only interested in the 3.0.

How many miles do they usually last? Can I expect, if treated right, a one owner example could do 200,000 miles?

What should I look for during an inspection besides the obvious coolant failure and radiator/water pump stuff?

Thanks for your help.

I bought a 2003 with 93,000 miles for $13,000 a year and a half ago. I've put a set of tires on it, replaced the brakes, and had it serviced once in 35,000 miles. I love it and would buy another one tomorrow. You'll have some of the issues in these posts, but just look up the problem and you can fix most of them. Drives like a dream.

Bought our 2003 earlier this year with 61K miles for just over 15,000. The differences between 04 and 03 3.0i are minor, with a different wheel and clear side markers being all I can remember.

I responded in another forum to your question, but the main difference between 03 to 04 is face lifted look with different headlights, grills and the Xdrive is better in the 04.

I too am a prospective X5 owner. But didn't the 2004 correct many of the problems with the earlier versions? I don't see the 2004 posted on too much. So, I am looking hard at a 2004 , one owner X5 with 87K. The dealer wants $13,900 USD. It's exceptionally clean, loaded and has a good history of only simple repairs. The previous owner ( I looked him up) says he changed the oil every 7500 mi and had no issues. He obviously babied it. ANY advice is needed and welcomed. I can set serious money aside for repairs but life is short and wasting time at the dealer or being stranded would ruin the experience. Please advise and thanks for reading my post.

I bought my 01 3.0i new (hers actually). It has just over 129k miles on it. It's never let me down, although I am pretty meticulous about maintenance. All of the typical M54 stuff applies (cooling systems, CCV, OFHG leak, VCG, Vanos seals, etc). My X5 also eats front brakes and outer CV boots. I expect mine to run to at least 200k. So long as the PO was good with maintenance, you should have no problem reaching 200k.
