Transmission Leak
I recently noticed a leak in my transmission and wanted to investigate where the source can be located. It isn't coming from the bottom seal, I know that for certain. Can anyone direct me to a diagram of the transmission for a 2005 645ci? Has anyone else had this issue before?

yes, its a cracked transmission pan. typically where the bolt is holding the pan. its made of plastic. its like a hairline crack, cant even see it until you lift the car up. A piece of crap since mine and a few others had to replace. Get ready to spend 800-1000 for replacement.

I'm doing mine for $433.28, not $800 to $1000. How? Glad you asked:
I bought the OEM oil pan replacement kit from eBay. Either search for part number 24117571227 or BMW transmission pan; there will be many models that have the 4.4 or 4.8 litre pan available, including gaskets, filter, etc. I chose to stick with OEM even though it cost more than the knockoffs. Cost? $185.12 shipped. Purchase 5 quarts Red Line Synthetic D4 ATF, $58.17. Take it to Aamco. The labor quoted locally is $189.99. They are cool if I supply the parts/fluid and they warranty their work but not the parts, obviously. Total? $433.28 including shipping. |
Wanted to follow up on this. After discussing the Red Line D4 ATF option with a few folks, I decided to go with the standard Shell M-1375.4 instead, costlier but needed for the ZF transmission.

No DIY for this issue?

It looks easy enough, here are the TIS instructions.

Check ATF flluid level
Can anyone confirm the procedure to check the ATF fluid level?
I have read the TIS and have attempted to complete the fluid level check but I am not certain that I have located the correct plug to remove and fill. Is it located on the left front? On the TIS, it looks like it is in the rear but I only find a plug with removal by a hex head on the left front up almost half way on the trans case. Is this the correct plug? |
transmission pan bolts
Does the TIS instructions for oil pan replacement say anything about providing new bolts? A tech told me the pan bolts are one time use only.
