Transer case noise

I have a BMW 2002 X5 3.0L which already runs 160,000.00 miles. Recently the underneath of the car makes noises when I accelerate it. The dealer says the transfer case needed to be replaced. The part cost $2300.00 plus $650.00 for the labor.
Is there any way to repair it or to replace it cheaper? Please help

Transfer case

I started hearing a hard clicking sound starting rolling. Took a while for my Indy to
figure it out. Yeah that was the prices I heard........well I found a rebuilt one from a FL
location for $850. I got it installed for another $350 or so for labor. My Indy rolled
his eyes by going non OEM original........well my X5 is just under 250,000 miles, over
a 100,000 on the rebuilt transfer case...... start searching!

Yes, the chain inside xfer case got stretched.

If you are a casual DIY, take a deep breath before opening the link (not for a faint of heart):bigpimp:

Might as well replace the xfer case shaft spline if you decide to go this route.
