2001 740IL - Numerous issues
I would greatly appreciate anyone’s inputs regarding purchasing replacement parts for my 2001 740IL. I have had the car for 1 year (passed all initial inspections without any problems) and now I am experiencing significant issues with the vehicle. It only has 100,000 miles and has the following problems. My recent quote from the BMW dealer was higher than I paid for the car. Used (non-dealer) seems to be my only option at this time.
- Transmission clutch plates are damaged (not sure yet about valve body condition - new trans or rebuild is required)
- Light control module has intermittent failures
- Engine thermostat not working properly
- Rear ball joints
Also, if anyone can recommend any brake replacement solutions. I found after market kits on EBay, but I am hesitant.
Thanks for your help!
You will never get a good deal at the dealer. The only good thing about going to the dealer is that they are almost guaranteed to use OEM parts, and since they only work on one brand of car, they are used to dealing with specific problems with specific cars. I would go elsewhere if I wanted a better deal, money wise.
For the transmission, I would call Kirt Koeller at www.autosportsunlimited.com and ask for his advise on the situation.
I have never worked on, or diagnosed a problem with a light control module, so I am of no help there.
The engine thermostat should be replaced, preferably with an OEM part. There are lots of part suppliers for BMWs on the internet, so you can find different websites and compare products and prices. Same with the rear ball joints.
I'm not sure what you mean by "brake replacement solutions". Are you asking about upgrading the brakes by going with larger calipers, rotors, and pads, or are you asking about what the best rotors and pads are for these cars?
