Remote Control Key Fails Intermittently

My remote control key on my 2011 535xi often fails when the car has been sitting in the sun. I have to manually unlock the car and hold the key to the steering column to start it. The temperature of the remote control doesn't seem to matter. The battery on the remote was putting out 3 V. I changed the battery to a new one (reading 3.1V) but it is the same. When the car cools off, the same remote works fine.

I took it to the dealer but it was working fine when I got there and they had no ideas.

Can anyone explain this to me?

thanks

Remote Key Fails Intermittently

Just a follow up - it began to fail more frequently (although still when the car temperature was elevated). I took it back to the dealer and they replaced the receiver and it works fine. The part took 7-10 days to arrive however.

Thank you very much for following up with the resolution.

Did the dealer indicate what the issue was with the key fob ?

I am having this exact problem in Dallas and am 100% sure it is because of the sun. It only started after the car was left outside. It's annoying. I have a call in to the dealer to get this remedied. Will update.

It isn't the key fob. The receiver is an electronic device in the dash somewhere. Presumably as it heats up, some soldered joint or other stops working.

Glad I found this thread, now I know I'm not the only one, had my car for just over 2weeks and I'm expreriencing the exact same thing. If the car is parked outside for a few hours the remote stops working and I have to use the key to unlock the car and put the remote to the steernig column to start the engine. Leave it in the garage overnight and it works just fine. The guys in the delearship were looking at me with skpeticism all over their faces (ofcourse it didn't help that it was 8am and everything worked fine).....I'm going back tomorrow

Looks like this issue is comming up recently.. added it to our sticky.. OP if you have the details of the serivice (What is the part number?) done please share it!.

I have the exact same problem with my 2011 550. Starts fine in cooler weather. If the car is left in the hot sun for >few hrs, the fob won't work. I have to hold it next to the steering column before it says "key detected, starting car possible". The car has been in the shop now 2weeks. Finally the SA called yesterday, says they will order a new antenna, will take another 4 days to get here. Is the antenna the same thing as the FBD or receiver, Ive seen mentioned above? The next thread #18 seems to be the same problem and the invoice included in one of the posts shows the part no.

Hi, I see that this is a very old thread, but recently have exact the same issue. What I have to do in order to fix it? What part I have to replace or maybe some resoldering I have to do?
Thanks for all suggestions.

It's never hot enough here for me to experience FOB failure due to heat , mid 60's low 70's is miserable - hurry up August !

Mine fails when I park near high voltage power line , the radio looses all the setting also -

Other places the remote has a hard time -

On or near the Army & Air Force Bases radar system -

On the Clear Air Force Over the Horizon Radar Station -

Parked close to the control panels for a Locomotive size generator set while it's running of course -

Now for a few photos !

remotes not starting engine unless placed under steering wheel

Hello- my first message on this forum

I have the exact same problem.

For my 2010 520D ( 27k miles) both remotes open the doors of the car OK but when I press the start button the car will not start and the message on the dash is that I should hold the remote by the steering wheel- this starts the engine. The batteries on both remotes are OK.
An independent BMW garage could not help- the diagnostic report showed all sorts of issues but none related to this particular issue, so could not help

The problem started when on holiday in France where the temperature was about 30, warmer than London (where we did hit 36 this summer for one day and we had no occurrence). A BMW dealer in France had not seen this issue before and were perplexed

If this is a heat- related issue then surely BMW should cover the cost of replacing parts- all very frustrating and waiting 2 weeks for a dealership to look at the problem

See my initial post above from 2013. Ask your dealer to change the "antenna amplifier (FBD)". I have no clue what that means, but apparently it also controls the GPS. After my post in 2013, and 4 visits to the dealer, they finally diagnosed the problem, replaced the part above, and it has not happened again in the ensuing 2 years. Prior to that, the car would not start whenever the temp got hot, like over 85-90 deg. Very annoying when you have to sit in a 100 degree car holding the fob against the steering wheel for 3-5 minutes while Honda Accords drive by w/o any problem. Another bimmer "feature".:)

Thank you for the response- most useful. Still waiting for BMW to have a look- I don't have GPS and just the starting which is a problem and still is even though temperatures are pretty cool-17 degrees C celsius today. Will post outcome later this month.

Bery 09-24-2015 08:04 AM

Today collected the car- all fixed by dealer. Had to pay for a diagnosis which was a faulty Diversity Aerial. They replaced the antenna amplifier and reprogrammed the remotes. Total cost 443. Also had two run flat tyres (now 5 in total in 27k miles) replaced
