Fixing the AC
Last year I purchased a wonderfully maintained '87 325ic. After replacing the exhaust system, the only thing left to fix is the AC . I've heard there are two different versions of compressors on '87s, one of which is compatible with the new coolant, and one that isn't. Any idea on how to start figuring out, first what to do, and second, roughly how much it will cost?

You may be referring to the Denso compressor. The Behr compressor is definitely not compatible.

How would I determine which of the two compressors I have?

The compressor should be labeled.

Here is a link to a thread I started showing both compressors:

Response to Penny
I wanted to thank you. After looking at the photos you attached, I went home and wiped off the label to see what I had. Mine didn't look like any of the pictures. Surprise! Someone had already converted it to an R134a compressor.

Bottom line is that I stopped by my favorite mechanic and he is going to recharge it with dye to find the leak and expects a very reasonable repair charge.

Sure beats the replacement costs I was being quoted.

Again, thanks for the help.
