Father-Son 335d (Msport) Delivery - Sept 6-14, 2011: Pix…AND VIDEO!! (48-hour rule??)
Ok, sorry it's taken me so long to get this posted. Been having too much fun in the Alps with the 335d. I must say the diesel is an absolute BEAST in these mountain passes. We are having a blast and still getting 30mpgs!!

I really like the RWD bias of the 335d. It just seems at peace with the road and handles so nicely. My Dad has now added the word "epic" to his vocabulary (Ha!) and is starting to think about picking up his next car this way as well.

Highlights include:
- 4 days driving through the Austrian, Swiss and Italian Alps; we hit 6 of the top 10 driving passes in Europe
- A 300 mile leisure drive from Zurich thru the Black Forest
- 3 Laps on the Nürburgring (aka "The Ring") then having dinner with Ron Howard (technically, he was eating at the table next to us); He was up at the Ring to start shooting his new film (a F1 movie called "Rush")
- Was at the Ring and witnessed the fastest track time (7:12) set by a Dodge Viper on Sept 12th
- Hung out on the pits of the Hockenheimring (another popular circuit in the Heidelberg area)
- Raced a bunch of Ferraris, Lambos and Aston's on the autobahn; you name the exotic car, and we likely played "cat and mouse" with them.
- Made a 150mph sprint back to Munich for our drop-off. The 335d was rock steady the entire time; felt like we were going 90. Seriously.....

Logged 1600 miles across 8.5 days and averaged 30mpg of full-on "lead-foot", "bat-out-of-hell" driving. The 335d is a beast. An economical, efficient and practical beast. I was lucky enough to snag one of the last production 335d's headed for the states. My D was dropped off in Munich on 9/14, hits the NJ port on 10/8 and should be back in my arms up in Boston on 10/19. A 4+ week turnaround; damn that's pretty fast!

Here is/was our route plan via GoogleMaps:

Delivery Video:
FYI - This video is blocked in Germany due to some of the audio/video that was used. I would've posted this earlier, but the final video was 220MB is size and took 2+ hours to load it into YouTube -- and the WiFi in our hotels wasn't as strong as I would've liked. :(

Video Gear:
We had a two GoPro camera's mounted in/on the 335d throughout the trip. 250GB worth of footage that I'm still sifting through. Stay tuned for more videos on this trip...... :)

Also, I'll include some additional details about the camera equipment and gear that we are using. In short, we have 3 GoPro HD's mounted in/on the car for this entire experience. And I am thoroughly impressed with the quality of the footage from the GoPro's AND the suction capabilities from the Gripper camera mount. FYI - Here's our two primary mounting tools for this trip:

Stay tuned…........

Tues. Sept 6th - 335d Delivery Day!!! (placeholder)
Here are some initial pix from the delivery day. I'll post more details in my "placeholder" replies below once we get stateside. And as an added bonus, I edited some of our footage into a little video from the delivery day. We had three cameras staged in the Premium Lounge watching the elevator to catch a glimpse of the elevator "moment". And as luck would have it, my bladder took priority and needed to find the "water closet" to relieve myself. Upon my return, I look down and see this shiny blue beast staring up at me. We had to sift through our video files to see it come up on the elevator…...........phew!!

The LeMans Blue is even better than I expected. And I can't get over how much I LOVE this Saddle Brown Leather. Notice the trim selection? The Piano Black Trim was an Individual Option ($1K addition)..and totally worth it. The Piano Black trim coupled with the Saddle Brown leather gives the interior a sensation of being incased in butterscotch and chocolate. Kudos to BMW's for giving your customers the ability to further individualize their cars! See this thread for details in how you can further enhance your order (all details inside):

FYI - My Msport was built with non-Msport rims. Long story, short: BMW ran out of the Style 193M rims....and built it with the ol' generic 3-series sport 5 spokers. Thanks to the 'Fest, I knew about this in advance and made an "arrangement" to get the 193's when my car is redelivered in Boston.

Also, my two boys built Lego Minifigs of themselves and their mother. These "figs" will be joining us for the trip and will be hidden within the 335d during marine transport. Quite the ride for a toy...if I do say so myself. Ha!!

Congrats! She's a beauty!

3ismagic# 09-09-2011 07:50 AM

Congrats on the car. Yes the d pulls awesomely on those roads.
Sorry you got the dreaded 287s, but good that it hasn't spoiled an otherwise awesome trip.

bredi 09-09-2011 02:47 PM

Beauty! I almost went LMB with Saddle Brown! Great combo! Look forward to the videos!

bredi 09-09-2011 02:55 PM

Beautiful car. And piano black is totally worth it. Congrats!

3ismagic# 09-09-2011 07:54 PM

Ferris Bueller regarding the 335d: "It's so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up."

B.] Completed a lap[s] of the Ring [in the wet]

C.] Had dinner with Ron Howard

D.] Did all 3 on the same day, and didn't post a single word ?

Nefilim 09-11-2011 11:29 PM

congrats teddy! the car looks great and you've got some great video footage!

was fully my intention to do likewise but between the sporadic weather and the not equally inclined missus there's been no use of my filmtools car mount :(

TeddyBGame 09-19-2011 01:09 PM

Thanks Folks! We got back late on 14th and got thrust back into work mode and will update my threads above with more pix, details and video. BTW - out 2 GoPro camera's captured 250GB worth of footage across those 9 days. Lots of footage to sift through; will likely need to break up the trip into multiple videos...not sure yet.

The 335d was better than expected. Almost 30MPG across 1600 miles (80% of which was spirited driving).

Highlights include:
- Driving the Nurburgring was fun; too bad the track was damp after the rain earlier that day
- Meeting Ron Howard at the Pistenklause (restaurant at the Am Tiergarten; At the Ring) was pretty coincidental
- Had a great dinner with Chuck (ChuckE89) and his wife in Hockenheim
- Got onto the pits of the Hockenheim Ring (by accident) and watched a bunch of Ferrari's, SLS's and GT3's turn laps
- Got the D up to 150mph on the A8 (from Ulm, Germany back to Munich).... playing "Cat and Mouse" with PyratOne's 1M. Good times!!

Stay tuned!!

BTW - it looks like we were at the Ring (Sept 12th) while Dodge was running laps with a couple vipers. At the time we didn't understand what they were doing....but my Dad found this story.

Dodge Viper lays claim to Nürburgring record with 7:12 run

At least this explains why the Tourist Laps were "removed" on the 12th. Luckily, we filmed both vipers (at various points) running these laps. God!!! I really need to dig into my footage and do some editing...and post it to YouTube. Stay tuned!!!

Both Germany and the US share the same "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday" principal, in the US it is NASCAR, over here it is Nordschliefe/DTM results that count.

TeddyBGame 10-12-2011 07:29 AM

Folks, I added a bunch more pix to our daily threads. It should give you a sense for how we spent our 8 days in September. Thanks for looking!
