Noob with a question

i have a 1996 328is ....and i want to turbo it. its an M52. and i was wondering if i needed to do anything internal or if i can just "bolt the turbo on"

I havent turbocharged a bmw but I have turbocharged many other cars. If you keep the boost down around 8 psi and properly tune the car you should be fine. What I mean by tuning is, you need to make sure you keep a stoichiometric air/fuel mixture and retard your timing. Any added horsepower does cause more stress to your motor, transmission and will cause it fail earlier than it may have if not turbocharged. Also do a lot of research. Dont by any china components.

From what i've heard the m52 is a very robust engine, and you should be ok with low boost. A new head gasket to lower the compression ratio is a good idea though, and would help stave off detonation.

By no means is it a bolt on operation, and should never be treated as such. There a lot of home work to be done. And quite frankly I have yet to see anyone go through the correct process of making a turbo car. If you car about your car and keep that motor in it....do some more research on turbo charging and how boost effects everything. Theres a lot of math involved with selecting the right turbo. Compressor maps simply don't cut it.
