Brake pads

Need new front brake pads for my 04 X5 3.0- dealership wants $850 installed - should I just take it to a shop & have them done? Would be MUCH less.

petriej 12-21-2011 03:30 PM

Just for pads? That's crazy.

Any brake place can do it for much cheaper.

On your own even better.

MissX5 12-21-2011 03:54 PM

Yea. Insane. I try to get all my work done at BMW but sometimes it's ridiculous. I just had the axle boots repaired there and paid 1k. I had an X5 before this one & i got my work done wherever & it started to break down before I got rid of it. So I'm trying to stay on top of this one.

That makes sense for some of the complex stuff (especially electrical), but if you just need a set of front pads, get them at meineke or whatever.

If you need rotors, they can be expensive, but not terribly difficult. I don't think there is anything regarding the braking system that is too complex for an indy, except maybe the Stability Control stuff...

sf2000x5 12-21-2011 09:35 PM

$850 sounds? sounds like new front rotors also. does the dealer replace pads only?

Spring20 04-23-2013 06:46 PM

I hope i only need pads. So expensive to get anything done to these things

I was quoted $935 for pads and rotors front and back.

Man don't do it at the dealer it's I just done mine last week by my self ,I bought the front and rear break beds from the BMW dealer for only about $250 and I bought the sport high performance Drilled& slotted front and rear Rotors from the eBay for only $211, and I done the job by my self it's not gonna take time from you it's very easy simple to replace them and if you don't know how to do it go to the You Tube and do search for it and you will know how easy they are and even didn't need special Tools !!!, just gave it Try ,,,

Should wait until Black Friday and go to Pep Boys to buy BRAKE PADS (Not BREAK PADS). I paid $19.95 per axle for my X so for 40 bucks I got pads for the front and rear.

Careful though when DIYing brake pads and rotors as they require special alignment, planing and calibration, otherwise premature wear and tear can result, and if not correctly installed , can be dangerous.

Im not a motorhead. I would not attempt this on my own. I just want a good job with quality parts for a fair price. I just dont know what s fair price is...

Any good euro or bmw specific indy will probably do your brakes for < 500 some may even let you purchase the pads and rotors of your choice and charge you for labor. most brakes all the way around should take no more than a couple hours at Best. that IMO is even pushing it when you know what you're doing and have the tools its really no different than any other modern car. along with air filters, oil and spark plugs; brakes are one of the simpler maintenance items on a car.

As it happens, I am getting new brakes next week for my e53 x5 2006, and I was quoted $525AU if it is just the pads front and rear, but if the rotors also require replacing, the job will cost $935AU , and this is a BMW authorised dealer master mechanic price in Perth, Western Australia. I think this is a fair price if you break it down:

4 rotors: $450
4 sets of pads: $250
Labor: $235

I think so too. I wouldnt be able to do it myself and to know its done right(since braking is just a little important) really doesnt seem to be that expensive

Hi guys, as a price guide, my e53 x5 2006 3.0i just needed the rear brake pads replaced, and at a BMW authorised dealership, I paid $388AUD parts and labour in Perth, West Australia to get this job done. My car now stops very keenly!
