nir_bs 02-16-2012 03:00 PM

i drove the car 2000 miles since purchased and fly wheel has blue discoloration should i replace it?

GaryRudolph 02-16-2012 04:20 PM

How much do they want for a flywheel? That would drive my decision vs. how much I'm already spending on the repair... For a 2009 car I'd probably just be replacing it if it was myself.

Is it warped at all (i.e. measuring it with a dial indicator on a lathe or similar)?
If you can't tell... Find out or replace it.
If it's not warped you can probably just rough it up with some sand paper to seat the new clutch.

Why isn't it covered under 4 years/50k miles warranty?

The Limited Warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship.

BMW Ultimate Service includes factory maintenance, brake pads, brake disks, wiper blades and drive belts. It does not include clutch parts.

Clutch is only covered by warranty. Dealer probably decided the previous owner abused the car. Easy enough to burn up a clutch on a 35i.

Abuse isn't covered. Worn out clutch isn't covered. Dealers have some discretion on using 'customer loyalty' to pay for part of all of a repair that isn't covered.

OEM dual mass flywheel is manufactured by LUK and it cost $1144 +tax
The clutch was badly abused by last owner..
New one cost me $375 the whole clutch kit..
sent the flywheel for resurface in San Diego for $80 hope this will save the trouble..

Dealer want Me to sign a form says I will need to pay $1050 just to open and see if it's covered in the warranty..if it is then I'm OK and BMW pays the dealership all costs, if clutch is abused then total cost is $3200+$1144 for flywheel..
Took it to my amazing mechanic total labor is $450
and the clutch was not abused, it was Raped..
Never believed to my own eyes guys..

Cpo

What is it about being a certified preowned unit that the dealer does not acknowlwdge. If you've abused the car, that's what you get but there should be other signs to reflect abuse, like no tread left on the tires etc. I had a simular problem but it truned out that the flywheel had excessive play in it. Dealer replaced flywheel and clutch components under warrenty. Enjoy your day-Gnatthecat

It isn't a certified preowned.. Nir_bs took over the lease -- that means it has the new car warranty but no extended CPO coverage. Even if it was a CPO, the Z4 is new enough that it would still be on the 4 year warranty.

Previous owner probably had to buy new tires. Either that or he really didn't know how to drive. The flywheel looks like the clutch overheated.

I do feel for nir_bs. Not much he can do except pay to have the car repaired. I'd be upset with the previous owner.

BMW UK offer an extended service package that covers clutch parts, but it costs almost as much as a clutch and flywheel.

nir_bs 02-25-2012 03:35 PM

i got it done for less then $70

flywheel is resurfaced in standard flywheel in vista california
they did amazing job and saved me $1100
lets hope its running smooth
tnx for all replies guys appreciate the help
and the car is not certified i took over lease...

nir_bs 02-25-2012 03:38 PM

total cost so far $980 and a month and a half with no car...

miss my baby bimmer...

just see if u can find BMS JB4 Chip for me...
never pay retail ($500)..

thayden 02-25-2012 08:27 PM

I assume this is a manual trans instead of the DCT? I read somewhere that the engineers off the record felt the clutchs in the DCT should last 200,000 miles..

nir_bs 02-28-2012 01:30 PM

it is the manual tranny.. only mine last 18,000 miles...

crappy last owner what can i say.. looks like resurfaced worked..
