Radar detectors and the F01/02

1 Attachment(s)
I recently took delivery of a new 2012 750Lix. A ritual of sorts, is normally hardwiring a Valentine One into every new vehicle to provide many hours of "uninterrupted" motoring!

To my dismay, it seemed that somehow the police had already targeted my sparkling new white car after driving off the dealer lot, as the Valentine was screaming constantly. I finally shut it off and crept home and into the garage. There I tried to power up again... and after about 20sec the same thing happened. Was the police staking out my garage?? I think not! (I would hope they'd have better things to do).

So, then began the internet search... After countless theories and speculations I finally discovered the answer... No it wasn't Siri on my iPhone 4S... nor was in the GPS/Nav antenna.

It was the car!! It was measuring its own speed and reporting back to the nearest poise cruiser!! No not really! They can't do that yet... I hope... lol.

Actually it turns out to be the Lane Change warning system (if equipped) that is always on as a safety feature whether you enable or disable.

So what's the work around... In the Fxx series Bimmer the Valentine is as worthless as a brick! It seems as good as it is... it is very antiquated when it comes to the sophisticated anti collision devices being installed in new cars. Hopefully they will come out with a fix soon, or risk going out of business.

In the meantime, try the Escort 9500ix... Wow, they've come a long way since the old Escort I used circa 1985-1995.

Not only does the new Passport work well in this car, but it learns repetitive false signals from garage openers as well as alarms and the like, and it even warns you of radar traps and red-light cameras from a national database that you can add to and update. Do I miss the directional indication of the radar signal? Yes. But there are so many other features that blow away the Valentine. I'm actually glad that it didn't work in my new car, or I might never have tried the Passport!

That's my opinion at least. I'm sure other radar detectors may work as well... but I know for sure the Passport does! I hope this helps!

Good luck out there... and happy "uninterrupted" motoring!!!

couldn't agree with you more.. I use the 9500ix with a zr4 shifter.. i thought the issues with the valentine 1 were resolved..

I install countless Passport units and love the way they work.. I am in the process of adding one to my 750 with the mirror display.

Does it void the warranty if you mess with the electronics like that? I don't have the lane departure warning system on my 09 750, but I do want to have my V1 hard wired. The electronics are just so advanced on this car I'm afraid to even tap into a power source. However, if someone can recommend any places in the SF Bay area that can do this, please let me know!

Xclusv Autosports 02-18-2012 02:52 PM

It should not be an issue with warranty. I have a full custom audio system in my car and am lowered and have no issues..

mpOrcl 02-18-2012 03:55 PM

definitely does not void the warranty..

9500ix here too on my 2012 750i. Works great, powererd direct to overhead console with splice connecter (no cutting wires). The only thing I don't like about the passport are all the verbal warnings especially when I'm on a phone call.

750Rick, all you need to do is download and install "ESCORT Detector Tools" on your PC and you can configure the default settings on your 9500ix including silencing that annoying voice warning! You have to register to get access to this but it also gives you 3 month worth of free GPS updates.

I heard lots of things about the infrared coating on the climate glass preventing the use of a windows mounted radar detector and I was told the same by the BMW dealer.

This is the same on the Mercedes but they have multiple uncoated areas, including near the dash.
Looking at the manual, BMW only appears to have a couple small uncoated areas above the mirror, making it less than practical for a mirror mount either.

So I just tried my 9500ix and it seems to work just fine. I have it mounted near the dash and it acquires GPS instantly and seems to indicate with the same sensitivity as in the SL600 (driving side by side).

So I am not sure if I actually have the climate glass installed. Is that an option or a default? I couldn't find it listed on the window sticker. Or is this only offered is warm climate zones?
We are in Minnesota

It's a new 2012 750li xdrive with driver assist, luxury and cold weather package...

Turn the rear radar antenna on the V1 off. This link will give you the information on how to do it. http://www.radardetectorforum.org/va...html#post20376

I have downloaded a few of the updates for California in the past, so I believe I have already registered. I'm surprised that Techsupport did not mention the ability that you describe when I called them last week about silencing some of the annoying voice warnings.

So you are saying that you can selectively silence the voice warnings but still receive audible alerts? That would be great!

Jblackbelt 09-09-2012 11:38 AM

its actually not the lane departure system as it does not use radar. its the blind spot assist system if anything, those radar sensors are in the rear bumper of the car. i can confirm that the 9500ci works great in the car and has no disruptions (i have drivers asst package as well, no acc though as that reportedly sets it off). highly recommend the 9500ci

Hello Jblackbelt... I also have the 9500ci and my "K Band" goes nuts when I start the car! Its driving me crazy! I had the same 9500ci installed in my last 750lxi and it worked flawlessly (I absolutely love it!) HOWEVER, since I have updated my car and installed the 9500ci into it, it does shut up now... My 750lxi has all options and I am willing to disable one or more of the options available in my car to allow me to speed along with a little piece of mind.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Good observation OP.
I have both V1 and Passport 9500xi. The V1 is now in my older cars with no interuptions.
Just ordered the Passport Redline last night. Can't wait to see how that will work in the 7.

TXSTYLE 06-04-2013 03:29 PM

I use my trusty plug n play ESCORT RX65 and it works flawlessly!

Escort and Passport are one in the same FYI. ;)

Wow! I am so glad I came across your post. My V1 is in the middle console because it won't shut the f... up.
It worked great in my other cars. As soon as I put it in my 7, it's been going off like crazy.
I guess I need to buy Passport.
Thank you so much for this post.

Make sure you get the 9500iX as other members have reported issues with the 9500ci in this thread!

It's a very cool detector! Definitely will get that one sooner or later. OIur two 9500ix's work flawlessly so far, even on our new Sl550 with Distronic Plus.

I always wire these to the cigarette lighter in the dash so that the ignition cutoff works nicely.

That thing looks and sound foking awesome!
But $550.... Shhhhhhhhhhit!!!

They dont have the official release date on the MAX, but first 1000 customers get a Free life updates or something. I have to look more into the thing. First 1000 also get free extended warranty. Its suppose to combine the Redline's range and options of the 9500. Its fugly but it works. But only time will tell.

Keep in mind, tint affects your radar dramatically (especially metallic one)

bimwad 06-09-2013 03:18 PM

I ended up with a K40 with remote sensors front and rear. The unit is powered on/off with a remote in my armrest. Works great.

I was told because of adaptive cruise - it makes no sense getting built in radar. It will interfere with K band???? What should I do?

I got the Passport Max about a month ago and it's a pretty nice RD.

I am using it in our SL which has Distronic Plus (adaptive cruise) with no interference at all.

Few pros/cons:

+ Overall great range and very few if any false alerts. Better than the 9500
+ integration with the Escort live service (saved my bacon many times already:thumbup: )
+ When listening via Bluetooth audio, the alerts are broadcast via the audio system with muted audio

- the display is too dim in a convertible
- it's supposed to detect the speed limit from the road you are on and then calculate the overspeed speed dynamically. The correct speed limit is showing less than half the time. Either it's missing or wrong
- the alert mutes too fast

Neutral:
The RD mount is stronger than the small dual suction cup mount but much bigger.

Overall, I m happy I got the Max. It's a natural evolution from the 9500ix with better sensitivity and a few cool features. All the negatives are supposed to be addressed via a firmware update shortly (v 1.4). But the 9500 is still holding up quite nicely ;)
