Annoying Rattle GGRRRRRRRRRR

Hi all,
when cornering i get a loud metalic rattling noise from the behind the rear passenger seats. it is a little better with the centre arm rest up.
I have pushed and pulled all the trim in the back and it makes no difference if the blinds are up or down.
It sounds like the boot is open or that the seat fittings are loose but i cant recreate the problem, only when driving.
i dont seem to get the noise when going over a bump (wheels symetrical over a speedhump lets say) but when one rear wheel goes into a manhole cover for instance the metalic juddering returns
ANY Suggestions will put me in a better mood
Many thanks

I have the same rattle - I believe it is either the plastic behind the rear seats or in the rear package tray area. I plan to partially dissasemble the area this weekend to investigate. It usually only occurs when the chassis is tweaked, such as pulling into an uneven lot or hitting bumps on one side.

Ultimate7 03-22-2012 10:11 AM

Yes that's exactly the problem. I have checked all the fittings in the CD CVD GPS NAV compartments and all looks secure, to me it sounds like its coming from inside the car.
I have also removed the plastic cover behind the arm rest but nothing there,

It might be we have to remove the seats but I'll wait to see how you get on this weekend

Thanks for replying to the post

I absolutely hate rattles in a car, my one pet peeve, I've just been putting it off. I imagine something comes loose over time, hopefully we'll address the issue for others as well. I think the seats come out easy and my need to be removed to access the package tray area.

Ultimate7 03-22-2012 10:19 AM

Yes I'm sure there are others with e same issue, with the roads here in the uk as smooth as a an alligators back bone the rattling is a real pain and takes the edge off the driving experience

Let's touch base early next week

Thanks again

Are you def sure it's inside the car .....check this thread out here :

did you ever get to the bottom of your rattle?

ndabunka 09-30-2012 12:47 PM

The plastic trim peice that extends across the entire back of the rear seat is a VERY common source of rattles like this. It is actually the "sides" of that trim piece that "rubs" against the sides of the car. Simply put some felt in there and POOF, the rattle is gone!

Great ill have to get onto it. How did you actually get the rear seat out? Was it easy to do?

You don't have to take the seat out to get to the plastic piece. It's above the seats themselves and the selt belts actually go through that peice.

Great, sounds like an easy fix. I should get it back tomorrow from the garage. New driveshaft bearing being fitted:(

MOPAULY 09-30-2012 06:16 PM

Do you have the ski bag package?

Ultimate7 01-15-2013 11:16 AM

just saw this post as i am going to attack this rattle again, i think i got the wring bit. should i wedge the felt between the plastic and the car, the plastic piece that the rear belt goes through? where did you put the felt?

no i dont have the ski pack

cheers

I posted something like this a month or so ago...Its two different types...ones with out the ski port which someone did a video on and said it was the plate thats tack welded and one or two of the welds become undone and thats where his rattle was from...the those of us who has the ski port which I hope this felt solution works out because this is driving me crazy. Sometimes mines is there then its not, and I think the weather has a lot to do with it. It gets cold here and things to expand and contract due to temp.

MOPAULY 01-18-2013 08:18 PM

Yes you nailed it - without the ski pack the tack welds will break free with chassis flex and you will hear that cover plate start to rattle. Removing the plate behind the armrest cover solves the problem. On squeaks I have now are from the cover above the instrument cluster and associated to the blower fans in the dash.

Genius!
took a look at the You Tube video and that was the problem, no more rattles peace at last Big smiles!

thanks again
:D
