First thoughts...

So I know it's been awhile since I have posted on here. I've been having fun with...well my wife's 2012 BMW 135i. It's our first Bimmer (well technically second but we won't talk about the first). Honestly, I'm surprised at how much fun it is regardless of it being a 1 series. I don't mean that in a bad way, I have just always thought of 1 series being more aimed towards chick type cars but I'm finding out they have guts and balls.

I'm also finding out that "Sport" button is more the launch button to a 300whp/300lbtq ship to the moon! We had our Lancer Ralliart before this and the Sport button was more for looks, sure it shifted a little more aggressively but it didn't really give you any more oomph. With the BMW, it basically transforms your car from a grocery-getter to a BMW performance mechanical rocket.

Honestly I haven't been pushing it all that much. My wife isn't really into going fast or pushing cars. The car only has 6,000 miles on it so I figure it's barely broke in. I'm always afraid to push it to far or to break something. I like keeping my cars pristine and well cared for...although I have people tell me all the time "Why didn't you just buy a Prius then! It's a sports car, not a mini van!"

Now the bad...well not really bad, just concerns. I had the oil level low come on the other day. I have yet to get an oil change or again really drive it hard. I have looked over the forums and haven't really noticed anyone else running into this problem. Is there something I should be concerned about? I put a quort of Mobil1 OW-30 European Blend in to get me by. I had planned on getting the oil changed at 7,500 miles, kind of a halfway point oil change. I have seen others ask, what are your thoughts about getting it done early?

Another thing I have been noticing is that as I drive and then come to a stop, I notice my car will idol around 700 rpms, but every so often a few seconds after I come to a complete stop, the engine will rev up a few hundred rpms for just a moment and then back down. It tends to do it almost every time I stop. It doesn't seem like it's a huge issue, but I don't want it to be a little thing that turns into a much larger issue. Anyone else notice this?

Using one quart of oil in 6,000 miles is not abnormal for the turbo motor.

Its funny there's a perception that bigger is somehow better. As you can see, I've owned a wide variety of BMWs, and I can say my favorite is a toss up between my two E46s. (I'm witholding judgement on my 128 for a reason; I'm presently smitten with it, but I want to get out of the honeymoon phase.)

The 550 was an awesome statement of luxury. However, dollar per dollar, the 170hp 325 with nothing but sport package and Vynocerous hide on the seats was the better car on any stretch of twisty road. Just enough power to not be slow, but not so much that you would get arrested for bouncing the tach against the redline through three gears.

Don't worry, this is not abnormal. The engine will burn a little more when new, and 6000 miles is fairly normal. 7,500 miles is fine for an oil change.

I wouldn't be concerned.

Some dealers will top off your oil no charge. Mine did. Part of the no cost maintenance deal. Check around. On Mobil 1, the 0W40 European Blend (this may be what you meant, though there could be an 0W30 EuroBlend that I have not run into) meets BMW Long Life standards. That's the thing you want to check for non-BMW oil.

If you get your oil changed early (some recommend a much earlier break-in change, but I would not worry about waiting til 7500), just make sure your counter is NOT reset. Otherwise, you'll have to wait again for the complimentary change.

Enjoy!

Autozone also carries a Castrol synthetic that is BMW Long Life certified. I use it as my dealer is not conveniently located.

Beware that you'll have the check the fine print on the labels carefully. Only one of the grades they carry has the LL certification. It also has a VW and Mercedes certification.
