E38 750iL gearbox doesnt always know it's in park!

Sometimes you get in and all is ok but other times even though the car is in park it doesn't light up the P on the dash and the car won't start unless you select neutral. I am guessing it is some kind of switch? Anybody know where it is how much and how easy to do? Also I have a whistling noise coming from the engine, sounds like it is a pulley ? I have had a new alternator water pump and power steering pump... Any more ideas?

Thanks so much guys :-)

Not sure about your engine noise, but trans problem is most likely is trans selector switch which is located on the side of the transmission.

Thankyou so much for your reply to my post, it means alot to know other 7 series owners will help out when a fellow E38er is in distress! I forgot to mention that the gearbox was ovehauled 25,000 miles ago and the gear lever just feels very wrong, its hard to describe but it feels very difficult to select P,D,R,N... like the gear lever is selecting in the wrong place?

Just because your gearbox was repaired that doesn't mean gear selector switch is o.k.
Basically when you select your gear there is a cable that goes from gearshift to that gear selector switch which is located on the side of the trans. May be with a second person you can look under the car when gear are being selected and see how that cable moves. But again when your gearbox was repaired 25.000 ago that switch is not repairable, so there was nothing done to it.
Good luck.
