Which roof-mounted bike rack?

Looking at the BMW roof rack accessories, I'm trying to decide whether I want to get the bike holder that holds the entire bike upright, or the one that has the fork mount and separate wheel holder.

I have both a mountain bike and road bike.

I figured I'd consult the vast knowledge of you folks before I made a decision.

Thanks!

Get the one that holds the entire bike upright; some MTBs have a thru-axle front fork and don't work with fork mount racks anymore. Also, both wheels go up top and you don't have to put one of them inside the car. Even better, get the Sportworks/Thule aftermarket bike tray. It holds the bike in place much more securely than the BMW one does.

My mountain bike is an old school GT with a triple triangle frame and Rock Shox fork. No problems locking the fork to a fork mount. The fork mount rack that BMW has also has an attachment to lock the front wheel so you don't have to put it inside the car. It looks more solid that the upright rig.

Another option is to get a hitch mounted carrier.

Bavautosports has a hitch for the E91 that they claim does not require any cutting to install.

I am an avid biker too. I have a road bike and a mountain bike, but I rarely use the mountain bike. I generally just fold the back seat and it fits nicely in my E91. However, I might be less enthusiastic about throwing a muddy mountain bike in there.

I bought the Yakima WhispBar for my E91 along with their SprocketRocket fork mount bike rack and am a very happy camper. The Whispbar is very quiet compared to any of the previous roof mount systems I have used on other cars I have owned and pretty easy to take off and put back on with the roof rails on my 2010 E91. Not quite sure if they have adapters for the rails you will get on a 2012 E91 however.

Alan,

I also have a 2010 328xi (cabrera red) with factory roof rails. I plan to buy the BMW base support system...my question, do they go on and come off easily? For appearances sake, I may not wish to keep the support system on all the time. KMK6

Just ordered a Sea Sucker for my F30 coming in next week. Proedgebikegear.com seems to have the best deals.

I know some people don't trust it or think it might scratch but can't find anyone to say anything bad about these racks. As long as you are careful in wiping down the surface beforehand I don't see any issues. You can take the rack on and off in 5 minutes and not have it ruin the lines of your car when not carrying bikes.

I have a Lefty Cannondale and will just use a fork mt adaptor. Check out this thread on mtbr forums. One guys got them mounted on his GTR and another on a 135.
