2007 X3 3.0TD leaking oil from oil pan bolt (with images)

Hi All,
I discovered a couple of oil drops in my garage this morning. I went under the car and noticed that it's leaking from one of the oil pan bolts. Unfortunately I don't have the 6 point star sockets to check if the bolt is loose or not.

Has anyone have had or seen something similar?
Would tightening the bolt fix the problem or the gasket needs to get replaced?

My car has about 65K miles and has always been serviced.

Thanks in advance.

It's a 17mm socket for the oil pan drain bolt. I thinkt he spec is 20 ft-lbs for the bolt. I would loosen it slightly and then tighten. But be careful, some of the bolts are hollow and made to break if you tighten too much. Better that then stripping the threads in the pan.

Wipe the whole area clean, and then try not to drive it for a while and see if it is really the bolt that is leaking or something else that flows oil down to the bolt. I had similar issue, thought it was the bolt, but then it was actually coming from above.

I think he is referring one of the (many) torx bolts securing the pan to the block.

Something like a T20 at a guess - really don't know.

Worst case is that the pan gasket is no longer doing its job, but certainly worth it to try tightening the bolt a bit.

The oil level is currently above the minimum. Any suggestions?
