Z3 Door Panel

I have a 2000 z3 and the passenger side interior door handle pulled out when using it to shut the door. I bought a new one, but it looks like I have to pull the panel off to install it. Anyone know how to pull the panel off?

1. Lower the window.

2. Gently pry out the mirror switch (driver side) or blank piece (passenger side) with two tiny screwdrivers. Remove the Torx screw behind the switch.

3. Slide the door latch handle surround toward the front of the car to release it.

4. Using a door panel tool that looks like a big bent putty knife with a notch in the end, pull out the door panel at each of the clips around the bottom of the door panel.

5. Lift the door panel upward off of the rubber window trim. To re-install, remove the window trim from the door and install on the panel first.

Some of the plastic clips around the bottom of the door may break. It helps to have some on hand. Door panel tools are easy to find at auto parts stores.

Thank you....so the torx screw on the handle itself is the only fastener?

Blacklane 06-09-2012 09:35 AM

Yes. It's the only screw.

In retrospect, there are better descriptions with pictures here. Near the top of the page on the right is a box called "Search this Forum." Click on that and type in "Door Panel Removal" and you will find lots of threads on exactly what you are trying to do.

The window trim covers the top of the panel...what does it mean to lift the panel upward off of the window trim?

Blacklane 06-10-2012 06:31 AM

There is a rubber piece at the top of the door panel the wraps into the window slot. Usually the rubber piece stays on the door when you lift the panel off. Sometimes it comes off the door. In either case, when re-installing it, put it on the door panel first.

Mine also has a Torx screw under the airbag badge at the edge of the door panel.
