Sit upon a throne long enough and someone’s bound to come along and try to knock you off—as was the case in the summer of 2008 when Cadillac released its all-new CTS-V to challenge the nearly 4-year-old sports sedan king, the BMW M5 (2009 Cadillac CTS-V vs. 2008 BMW M5 SMG). It was a historic moment that has helped to redefine Cadillac’s image. GM’s luxury division made no bones about it in 2008, as it specifically developed the CTS-V to knock the 2005–2010 E60 M5 off its pedestal. BMW graciously rose to the challenge and fought it out with the upstart on the racetrack, the BMW driven by Bill Auberlen and the CTS-V by John Heinricy. Not surprisingly, the CTS-V narrowly edged out the M5. If it hadn’t, we suspect someone in Cadillac’s engineering department would have been fired. Fast forward and BMW is now ready for some payback with its new F10 M5.

Nice vindication for BMW and the F10 M5!

Ah, another review where the 2011+ 5-series ranks well, but there is an obvious under-tone of disappointment in the vehicle. I guess reviewers need to start understanding that luxury will be the first priority of the 5-series. As they say, it is not a “supped-up” 3-series any more, but a smaller more athletic 7-series.

I thin it's fair enough that reviewers from enthusiast magazines prefer the Cadillac as the drivers car, but the fact is most people won't care. As much as the modern M5 buyer likes the idea of driving a supercar, the reality is they want comfort, gadgets and luxury with big performance numbers.

The new M5 (& M6 for that matter) ticks all those boxes but IMO it's not inherantly more sporting than a regular 5er, just much faster.

There are so many choices and the M5 is no mistake.
I wouldn't mind a Caddy CTSV or a Nissan GT-R.

While I can respect the Caddy and what its all about, I never even considered it as an alternative option.

The Caddy is too loud. Auto journalists think this is a great thing, but in my company's parking garage, there's a guy with a Mustang Boss or something and the whole building shakes when he starts it. If that sounds like a good thing, by all means go for the Caddy. I prefer to enjoy my possessions without everyone else noticing, thanks.

Tim, I just read an article on yahoo about some company tuning that caddie to produce almost 1200hp! Have you seen that. I can't imagine the cost to insure that beast.
