2008 528xi LCI-Halogen - AE and HID upgrade

Hey guys,

This is going to be the first thread I start so be nice!

I recently got my 2008 528xi and I've been loving the way it drives and handles so I thought I'd start investing into the looks of my car. The first mod I decided to do was to upgrade the lights.

After much research through this forum, I found out that Angel Eye upgrade for LCI-halogens is not easy to find a plug and play. The socket does not match if you just purchase any AE bulb. In order to get LED angel eyes for this car you must must modify the LED bulb such that it uses the socket from the stock AE bulb. This isn't very straight-forward so I purchased mine from John@Motorcepts. SHOUTOUT TO JOHN!

Here is a picture of an Mtec V3 bulb modified by John with correct socket:

I think he used silicone to seal and ensure socket will stay put. It worked out well during installation. All I had to do was remove the headlight housing so that my arm had room to properly secure the bulbs in place. AFter that it turned on like a charm!

Now onto the HIDs!

I also purchased these from John@Motorcepts because everyone seems to reference him for lighting needs :)

The only tricky parts about this install were:

1. The stock metal bracket that holds the bulb had to be cut so that I can get it fed around the wires for my HIDs. This was scary at first but using a dremel it wasn't so bad..

2. Finding locations for the ballasts.

I used zip ties and industrial velcro on each side to make sure that these stay put and don't rattle around.

Left side:

Right side:

After that it was again plug and play with no errors in idrive.

Looks great!

I love driving at night now so I can show off the lights. The beam line comes out well and after testing with some friends doesn't seem to bother them when they are oncoming into my lights any more than normal headlights.

My next mod will probably be the M5 style spoiler and some carbon fiber decals :)
Any suggestions for exterior mods?

Cheers!

Daniel, first of all great job on the install, it looks great. Do you mind posting some pictures up of you beam pattern on the ground and against the wall? I did the same HID conversion as you did on my LCI halogen headlights and want to see of my bulbs are aligned properly.

Sharif5 07-20-2012 02:02 PM

Can you tell me where the bulb is found for the rings as I would like to get the white led rather then keep the yellow

daniel4x3 07-28-2012 08:02 PM

@imagine - Here is a pic of my beam pattern. My driveway is tilted downward which is a pain in the snow... but the line has some edges and the bulb wire shadow shows on the ground. There is a fix for it but it requires some dremel-ing of the bulb holster which I opted not to do. I think there is a thread about the mod somewhere to get rid of the shadow.

@Sharif5 - This DIY video is more helpful than me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15ght75I-mo

cheers!

Ya that's how mine looked before I put the bulbs in the right way with the return wire facing down. You should do the notch in the bulbs. It'll look much brighter afterwards

Doing this SAME EXACT upgrade to my 528i also this weekend.
Imagine, i really curious to as what you are referring too; 'notch the bulb'. have any pics?
thanks,

thanks,

When you install the HID bulbs, you'll notice that when the bulb goes in, the return wire is facing up (THAT IS WRONG).

When you put the bulb in with the return wire facing down, the bulb won't sit flush therefore you have to notch it. Attach is a pic, the red shows where the part that needs to be cut, use a dremel or some strong wire cutters will do.

How did the purchase through this website go? If you scroll through the bottom for the description, it sounds eerily similar to E-92's description on their website. How did the angel eyes look after install? Any codes?

colin007 03-27-2013 11:15 AM

does this apply to a pre-LCI 2007 E60?

If I'm not mistaken, this particular set is for LCI 2008-2010.

lakersfan81 03-27-2013 11:34 AM

I was going to purchase E-92's set and then saw this thread. When I tried to go into motorcept's shop, there is a page error. Then this guy posts where he purchased his through and it looks a lot like what E92 offers but for around $20 less and looks like it comes straight out of China. Not sure on the quality of either one, though.

Vlamison 03-27-2013 12:03 PM

fast shipping. 2 days and i had it in hand. and the person was located in china, of course i paid for a fast shipping. no codes on board, it comes with a code canceller. angel eyes looks great, during the day its a little white with a little purplish blue, not very bright during the day but at night it looks really nice. at night it gets more blue. like 6k reason why i bought it was cuz i had no other option. this one was plug and play. otherwise i would have to cut the head of my stock bulb, buy an AE aftermarket bulb that most e60 uses and glue it. like DANIEL4x3 did. seems too much work lol

Vlamison 03-27-2013 12:10 PM

they all come from china hahaha. on idjmtoy, there is a 20w cree that they sell for 150+ dollars. i bought it on ebay for 66 shipped. ended up returning because it didnt fit. the ones i bought is 44 dollars but it will take 1-26 days to be delivered cuz its from china. thats why i paid 94 dollars and i had it in 2 days. so basically i paid 50 dollars shipping. the ones i bought u can find on ebay for 20 cheaper, from united kingdom. e-92 sales it but they a little more expensive, cuz i think its 99 + 20 or 30 dollars shipping. they are meant for e60 528i with halogen headlight. even tho my headlights r projectors and it already came with stock angel eyes but my projectors r non xenon.

Thanks for the reply. So you didn't see the E92 Lighting's option(also plug and play and also around 7k)? Also, did you have to buy two sets or just the one for $100? How much did you pay total with two day ship? I saw the website you linked and it looked a little off so it's nice to see it worked for you.

lakersfan81 03-27-2013 12:13 PM

I see. Mine are the same. Kind of figured all of them came from China but E92's ship from here. That was another thing I was worried about.

Vlamison 03-27-2013 12:44 PM

i saw e92 options, but the other website i posted here had a better price. 1 set for 94 dollars. 1 set comes with 2. i paid 94 for kit with 2 days shipping included. otherwise you can buy it for 44 dollars and wait 1-26 days shipping. no regrets. later on i will do orion v2-v4. ya looks weird but it works. its chinese lol no offense lol. if it doesnt work u can always call the bank and tell them to cancel. dont be worried. in 2 days u will have in hands. im in texas. where u at?

lakersfan81 03-27-2013 12:51 PM

Yea, I started looking on ebay and saw the option from UK. After shipping, it comes to $94. I'm in LA. The real reason I was willing to go with e92 is because they are close to me but after the tax and shipping, total would be $144. I spoke to the guy there a few weeks ago and he told me they have two options. The 7k for 119 per pair or a less brighter set for 100 a pair. Not sure how much brighter the 119 dollar pair is. Probably similar to yours. the link you pasted shows the total to be around 100 so I assume they already add the 50 dollar shipping to it, right? I also thought about doing the Orion upgrade but it's a lot of work and I don't have time to take the headlights apart. Did you upgrade your headlight bulbs to HID or brighter Halogens? IF so what brand did you use? Can't imagine sticking with the stock H7 after upgrading the AE's to white.

I just saw that the shipping is included. You don't have any pics of your AE's at night, do you? or are they the same as the supplied pics on ebay from the other sellers?

Vlamison 03-27-2013 01:08 PM

ya, the 50 dollars shipping is already added to the price. most likely u will have it in 2-3 maximum. it says on their page thats if no delived in 4 days they will give money back. mine is 10w the one e92 sales r 12w. not a big difference, i dont think you cant even tell, and for 44-50 dollars less i choose to go with the one from china. you know umnitza does the orion installation right? they charge 250 dollars. u gotta send ur headlights tho. i havent done hid yet, im looking for prices and a good brand. theres a good brand on ebay for 120 lifetime warranty. it needs to come with can-bus so u dont get dash board warning. mtec seems to b the best but they r 240 dollars. hahaha ya, it looks a lil off with halogens. i want to do fog lights first, cuz i want to use the angel eyes with headlight off and have fog lights on. i was looking at the picture of the white bimmer with angel eyes on this page, and my angel eyes looks exactly the same as the pic on this page. i think mine is just a little whiter. and inner ring and out ring on my angel eyes have the same brightness which is good.

Vlamison 03-27-2013 01:10 PM

i do have pictures, but they look white on the picture, and they r more blue in person. but if you look at the picture on this page, its almost exactly the same, but i think mine is a little whiter, just a lil bit, not too much. i think to match the AE you will need 6k 35w hid

Vlamison 03-27-2013 01:13 PM

what color is ur car?
i got the alpina white

lakersfan81 03-27-2013 01:20 PM

My e60 is light silver.
I also spoke directly to Umnitza about having an installer here in LA because I really couldn't afford to send them out and be without headlights. The e60 is the only car I drive right now. Turnaround is too long for me. They told me he stopped doing installs for them. I was able to locate him directly on this forum but he recently moved out of the Country. his install fee is decent but I wasn't ready to spend the 500 for the AE's without first deciding on HID's for both the headlights and fog's.
