Starting Our Search for a new 7

1 Attachment(s)
Hello! We are in Vegas and own an 06 750Li we have had for about 15 months. Prior that we bought a 06 3 series new and drove it for 5 years. Sold the 3 for the 7 (about a $10K upgrade cost with similar miles and year - so not too bad).

However, ever since I had a 2009 730d rental in Germany 3 years ago I have been dieing for the new 7. So we are starting our search. I am willing to be very patient to find exactly what we want. We were not as patient as we could have been for our current 7 and I am now regretting that.

That said, I am starting to compile a list of options on the 7 and I would love to understand how to figure out if the car has the option and what the impact/functionality of the option is. Attached is a window sticker I found for a 09 7 that seems to be fully loaded. It is also for sale here with additional pictures. Options listed are (and how I think you can determine if the car has the option (from pictures only)):
- Camera Pkg (rear/side view): This puts a small camera in front of each front wheel on the fender. Also looks like it puts a camera button on the center console to the left of the shifter.
- Conv Pkg: Same as my 2006, auto tail gate, easy close doors and keyless access
- Driver Asst Pkg: Lane Departure Warning, Auto High Beams and Blind spot detection (my rent car has this and it was awesome). This puts the warning triangle on the inside of the front mirrors. Is the Blind spot detection a standalone option? Does this also put 3 buttons on the left side of the dash by the headlights control?
- Lux Seating Pkg: Heated steering wheel, power side/rear shades, Active Driver seat, Front cooled seats, ski bag and rear heated seats. I think this is the same as 2006 except for the heated steering wheel. I'm looking for the buttons on the driver door for the shades, and the active seat (I think it is to the right of the M-1-2 buttons, what is to the left?) and of course the seat cooling button on the A/C control panel.
- Rear Lux Seating Pkg: Rear cooled/comfort seats. Not sure how to see this other than noticing the seats a much nicer. Does this put extra controls on the rear center console (on the inside seat sides)?
- Premium Sound Pkg: Adds Ipod/USB Adapter, Premium hi-fi (is this similar to Logic7?) and adds a 6 disk DVD changer. Does this work like Ford Sync where all the Ipod songs would be uploaded and controlled from the idrive? Also, this adds a DVD changer. Without the Rear entertainment package would this only make CDs usable or does this allow the front seat passengers to watch DVDs?
- Rear Entertainment Pkg: Puts the DVD screens on each seat - easy to see. What should I be looking for accessory wise? There should be 2 wireless headphones and a remote control, right?
- Sport Pkg: 19 inch wheels, Active Steering with sport leather steering wheel, Shadowline trim and roof trim the same as the body color. Easy to see from the outside, window trim is black instead of silver. Is this a 100% of the sport pkg as shadowline trim wasn't a standalone option that year correct? Is the roof trim a better indicator? Also what is the impact of active steering?
- Ceramic Controls: Seems tough for me to tell the difference.
- Active Cruise: This will put 2 additional buttons on the left side of the steering wheel and one button on the left dash. Rent car also had this and we loved it, though it took a little while to get used to.
- Smart Phone Integration: Not sure how to spot or what it does.
- Night Vision: I think this adds the camera behind the left grill. Now sure though how to spot. Is this option worth it at $2600?
- HUD: Not sure how to spot this.
- Sat Radio: Is there any way to spot this without the car on?

So, as with all bimmers, lots of options available. What ones do you guys value the most? What would be nice to haves but you could go without?

If it matters, we generally just road trip our 7 and put about 6-7K miles per year on it. My wife sits in the back with our infant and I drive on the open road. I think she would love the rear entertainment and comfort seats and our kids as we get older would love it too. We plan on keeping this 7 for quite a while. The 2006 7 was just a stepping car for us until the 2009 7s got into the price range we want.

Thanks for all the inputs - I know this was long and had a lot of questions.

Hey local Vegas member! I think you are looking at a nice equiped 7! My wife also sit in the back with my infant. :) Couples of things, the wheels are actually 21', and I think is one of the best design out there, and it cost over 6k new just for that. The car also has front lip kit which I also consider a plus. Just make sure you have extended warranty on it since the factory one will expire soon. I sell warranty through one of my carrier, and the price is not pretty, so hopefully the dealer will offer it to you.

Individual750LI 08-11-2012 10:03 AM

BTW, if you think the 21' is to much, rides harsh, and replacement cost is too high, I will be more than willing to trade you with my individual rims with new tires, with cash on top, of course. :D

Thanks for the answer. I am not looking at this car specifically - more so just using this car b/c it looks like it has every option imaginable. I actually don't like the wheels on the linked car but that is prolly just me ;). I do like yours BTW. I think I like the wheels with more "spokes". Thoes have just 5, whereas yours have more and even my 06 7 has like 12-14 spokes. I really like the Alpina wheels.

I know I will only buy one with a CPO. Which, if I can find a later build/purchased 2009 7, should take the normal warranty out till 10/14 and the CPO warranty out until 10/2016.

Individual, what options are on your 7? What are your favorites and which do you rarely use?

wjhughes420384 08-11-2012 10:32 AM

one option you should look for is the ARS (active Roll Stability)

Thanks. That is a standalone option or is included in the sport pkg?

Can you tell me what it does? Seems like it shouldn't be needed as the car is not an SUV and shouldn't flip/roll.

Individual750LI 08-11-2012 10:52 AM

ARS makes world of difference, and night vision is completely useless. How old is your baby? I am happy not having rear luxury sitting since my one year old always makes a mess back there, and having it can give him more stuff to play with ( you don't want him to mess with your idrive )

Individual750LI 08-11-2012 10:54 AM

HUD is very nice to have, and you can easily spot since you will see a screen on top of the dash.

Our baby is 7 months. That is a good point. If I get the rear entertainment package but not the rear lux seats does it not put Idrive controls back there?

That is after power is on the car right? How can I tell from just looking at pics on autotrader/cars.com, etc.

Thanks so far for all the input. I hate "blank" buttons in the car. I can't figure out what all 5 of the buttons left of the steering column would be. There can be 5 and they are in the attachment. I assume 2 are the driver asst, ones is active cruise, not sure what the one with the moon is and the "i".

>>>> rear camera and luxury seating and conv pkg come as luxury pkg now. i will get it.
so is the driver assist, front view cam and hud is nice to have
- Rear Lux Seating Pkg: Rear cooled/comfort seats. Not sure how to see this other than noticing the seats a much nicer. Does this put extra controls on the rear center console (on the inside seat sides)?
>>>> i want it but encounter with the problem of possible smaller or only two seats available for the back so i pass on this
- Premium Sound Pkg: Adds Ipod/USB Adapter, Premium hi-fi (is this similar to Logic7?) and adds a 6 disk DVD changer. >>>>> this is standard and now have the bang olufsen system, 3700 but i tried on other bmw and it sound just like premium ( listenned to on the floor by jlo), (a BO audio specialist at local BO stored said the system was research for the purpose of make all sound band rich and clear and audible for everyone, none should be more dominant than other. BO suits best for classical, orchestra, instrumental music such as kenny g, beethoven, etc. ). i skip on BO
- Rear Entertainment Pkg: Puts the DVD screens on each seat - easy to see. What should I be looking for accessory wise? There should be 2 wireless headphones and a remote control, right?
>>>>having some rear entertainment is nice, good for long road, such as the drive from las vegas to los angeles, but i can replace oem sys with ipad. the oem system has (stated by sale rep) only one dvd source, so both of my kids must share the movie. Two ipad would do better job. they have ipad hanger for less than 200. in addition, the rear enter.sys. screen position is ok for adult but too hig for my kid.
- Sport Pkg: 19 inch wheels, Active Steering with sport leather steering wheel, Shadowline trim and roof trim the same as the body color. - Active Cruise: This will put 2 additional buttons on the left side of the steering wheel and one button on the left dash. Rent car also had this and we loved it, though it took a little while to get used to.
>>>>> i drive the car and rarely use cruise control, so i pass.
- Smart Phone Integration: Not sure how to spot or what it does.
>>>>> standard ??
- Night Vision: I think this adds the camera behind the left grill. Now sure though how to spot. Is this option worth it at $2600?

other options werent list but i prefer to have is ARS and Full LED.

Thanks rqp! For the active cruise, how much do you use the cruise to begin with? I set my cruise all the time - literally.

It seems some options you are talking about are on the newer 7. I was quoting the 09 7. Do you know what the smart phone integration does?

Rear entertainment has idrive, what I did is not having the option, but have 2 ipads put in the back, cheaper and you can enjoy more out of it. :)

The one with the "I" is headsup display, the one with the moon is night vision.

I use active cruise all the time since it works flawlessly unlike my Lexus LS UL. Also the pre-collsion function saves me couple of times too.

You should come to my office to see my car, I won't let you drive it, but I can let you check it out. :p

I might have to take you up on that. What option adds the pre-collision function, is it just included in the driver asst pkg?

Individual750LI 08-11-2012 12:40 PM

It's the second button from the right on the five buttons. I am not sure which option it comes with, most likely the active cruise.

trekwars2000 08-12-2012 10:54 AM

Is there anyway to figure out how many of a specific color/option combination was even made?

I'm already really handcuffed because a light colored interior is a must. And my exterior color options aren't that flexible either. Add in that I must have active cruise control and cars are becoming hard to find.

wjhughes420384 08-12-2012 06:31 PM

the front cameras are a waste, I have them and use them rarely. the rear camera is worth its weight in gold though
