Hot start issue and something else while youre here
Ok been battling this issue for a while now

When the car is operating temp and I shut it off for 5 minutes it'll start up no problem.

However if the car sat for maybe 15-20 mins it will refuse to start or will have a hard time stating up. Most cases extra long crank, sometimes more than one extra long cranks or long crank than it catches misses goes to about 300 rpms stall or it will gain composure and idle fine. sometimes it'll stall twice.

Leave the car for about 2-3 hours or more it starts up first try.

Long story short:
When Hot-
5 Mins =Start

15-20mins = No start

2.5hours- or more = Start

I changed
the Coolant temp sensor = No change
Cam sensor= thought it worked but today it took 2 cranks on the first start of the day
Crank sensor= first thing I changed (Cant remember if this was the reason why I changed it)

Once the car is started it runs and idles perfectly

This has been going on before AND after chipping the DME

Oh and once it starts it does have a weird smell (gas maybe?)

This may have to do with when I let off the throttle the car stinks but as long as my foot is on the gas there's no smell

Young Ken, suggested a clogged return line and the fuel is just running in to the chambers :dunno:

And before the 1st start of they day my car started like it was missing for a second or 2 then continues fast idling normally

This may sound odd, but have you ever changed your O2 sensor?

Changed fuel filter?

Cleaned ICV?

BMRfanatic 08-13-2012 03:41 PM

o2 was changed- CEL went away less than a mile for it

Fuel filter was changed last year

ICV was cleaned last year

TB- cleaned last year

Sparks- last year

Coils are all in the right ohm spec (but spark would cause it to act up all the time no?)

Seafoamed not too long ago

Had no CEL after the o2 was changed but the light went out like 2 weeks ago

I have the exact same problem you are having. I have also changed and clean the same parts as you. The next thing on my list was to change my fuel pump and fpr (fuel pressure regulator). Try checking your fuel pressure, after the car is nice and warm.

BMRfanatic 08-13-2012 04:05 PM

Where and how should I go about doing that?

the crank sensor is ruled out. Got a constant reading of 638 ohms

peels'bimmer 08-13-2012 04:39 PM

Check out this thread on Bf.c. Although he is fixing a hose. It should be the same process of getting to the fpr.

BMRfanatic 08-13-2012 05:13 PM

aghh looks like im gonna have to invest in a pressure tester

jonesin 08-13-2012 05:17 PM

Harbor Freight: $20.

Thank God, I saw a video on how to narrow down if its the pump and other crap. Looked easy on youtube but we all know things dont go smooth when you actually try it lol

oh well Good luck to me

peels'bimmer 08-13-2012 05:39 PM

Can you post the video link?

BMRfanatic 08-13-2012 07:27 PM

Part 1

Part 2

Sent from my SPH-D710 using Bimmer App

Thanks for the video link. That was very helpful, but damn, that guy has a boring voice!

take off the fuel filler cap and see if it does that.

as in take it off BEFORE you let it sit.

Hmm seems odd and easy enough to do

but what would that do to the issue?

bigugly fab 08-14-2012 04:10 PM

perhaps. try it and report back.

more than likely you will get a check engine light on, so make sure you have the ability to clear it for a major DMTL leak.

BMRfanatic 08-14-2012 04:37 PM

nope same thing took 2 tries to start it up

My check engine light bulb doesnt work so i cant tell if it caused a code

but then again OBD1 doesnt car for emissions so it probably wouldnt care.

Car ran the same with or without the gas cap

bigugly fab 08-14-2012 05:09 PM

no pressure came out?

BMRfanatic 08-14-2012 05:13 PM

yeah pressure did come out

does it matter that I started the car, shut it off then opened the cap?

bigugly fab 08-14-2012 05:17 PM

BMRfanatic 08-14-2012 05:21 PM

agh , well the car has been sitting now, should I pull the cap now since the last time i started it was when i last posted my findings?

bigugly fab 08-14-2012 05:28 PM

do whatever you have to do to replicate the long crank AFTER you pull the gas cap off for a bit

BMRfanatic 08-14-2012 05:32 PM

Ok i just took the cap off (car has been sitting for 30 mins now) no pressure came out

give it 10 mins then start it with the cap off?

bigugly fab 08-14-2012 05:41 PM

go start it and drive it, just like your first post. sheesh this is hard for you to understand! lol

Then park it and take cap off after turning engine off?

I'm not following either...

BMRfanatic 08-14-2012 05:55 PM

Lol I just drove it with the cap off nothing changed

What I understood was.

Take gas cap off, start car, drive it

When I 1st took the cap off there was pressure

unless you mean leave cap on, drive car , wait till i know the problem exposes itself then take off gas cap and see if theres pressure?
