01 740i - Tranny Downshift Issue

Hello I am a recent owner of a 2001 740i. I am currently having an odd issue that I have noticed a few times. When I am coming to a stop from at least 40mph or so the car will downshift very suddenly and semi harshly. No noises or anything like that, just a harsh downshift, also when you go back to accelerate, unless you press the throttle pretty hard, it seems kind of sluggish off the line, kind of feels like it being pulled back.

Also I noticed when coming to a stop during the harsh downshift my rpms go down at a normal rate, while my MPG gauge seems to stay up even when my foot isn't on the peddle. Is this normal?!?!?

I know my description may seem vague and I apologize but any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

You need to check fluid LEVEL, COLOR & SMELL. Depending on your millage, you might consider fluid change (not flush) & transmission filter change.

For me (not a trans. expert) sonds like a low fluid level or filter clogged which can result in starvation. Few tips for changing the fluid are here http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...818&highlight=

That was my guess. Gonna have it serviced at beginning of next month. what is the difference between a flush and change?

Change is drain fluid...flush is flushing out old fluid by using a flushing fluid to clean out all the old fluid, which apparently can loosen up contaminates or dirt that can clog valves in the tranny and cause more harm than good(at least that is what i have read from other posts)

Just in case anyone else has had this problem, it ended up being the MAF. I cleaned the MAF and have not had the problem since I started this thread

This.

Other reasons why this happens, or even mixed with the Maf is a vacuum leak.
