Failed inspection
Just bought a 97 328is with 64000 miles on it and took it to get inspection and failed. My mechanic said i needed new ball joints, right rear trailing arm, transmission mount, and sway bar bushing. I can do all the work myself but a new trailing arm seems kinda weird. Isnt it usually a bushing that goes? I feel like the mechanic is just trying to get money. It drives pretty good and dont notice and rear end slop.

Sure he didn't mean trailing arm bushing? Get under it and take a look! Right at the front of the rear wheels.

He meant trailing arm because he quoted me 650 for the part itself..

is it bent or cracked?? :dunno:

Sounds like he is padding the invoice. If I were you I would take it somewhere else and see if the two estimates have commonalities. If there are any, there you go.

I have access to a lift today so im gonna check for any warping or cracks in it.

A trailing arm is not a normal wear item. Replacements are pretty expensive. Unless you smashed into a curb i dont see it needing to be replaced. As Reilly said, hes just milking it for more.

The sway bar bushings i can see needing replacement as they do wear out. Their pretty inexpensive and something you can do yourself. As for the ball joints, to test if their good or not, grab the wheel at 3 and 9 and shake it. Their shouldnt be any play. It should feel solid.

my mechanic said that the trailing arm bushings are bad so thats why i need a whole new trailing arm. Im just gonnna get the ball joints done there too because i dont have a press to get the ball joints in and out of the control arms.

Just buy the control arms with the ball joints in them. You can't change the inner ball joint anyway (can't change either one on the M3 arms, FYI)
