When I was a mere teenager, we looked down on those who put "Y-pipes" on their cars, as opposed to installing a true dual exhaust system. Just sayin'.

Topaz540i 09-03-2012 02:32 PM

yea its gonna look kinda odd without a can behind the second set. Its def gonna be highly visible.

umnitza 09-03-2012 02:58 PM

It looks perfectly fine from behind the car. We're doing some tweaks to make it look even better.
It's not for everyone, neither is a 97-2000 540:)

Albo 09-03-2012 03:00 PM

Ghetto...

Albo 09-03-2012 03:06 PM

...can you put a fake exhaust can back there as well?

Darren1231 09-03-2012 06:24 PM

The header config is already a 2 piece is I'm not mistaking. Why not make a true dual kit with an x pipe?

Coochie_Bandit 09-03-2012 06:39 PM

Idk... Looks good from behind.. But awkward without the can on second set.

This is not my cup of tea, but I say kudos to Umnitza for developing this setup. For those who want a quad setup it seems like it would be nice to have an option that does not require body/under carriage modifications. But I am sure people with vote with their checkbooks or I guess debt/credit cards.

I'm not sure this was a serious comment, but that might actually look good if there is enough room to fab something there. I mean, unless I am missing something this quad exhaust thing is about aesthetics.

There are a bunch of people who have done a true dual exhaust system on non M e39s, but it requires cutting and reconfiguring the metal in the spare tire carrier area to have enough room to mount the second muffler. M5s don't have a spare tire that is why they have enough room for it from the factory.

Personally I think it is a little nuts to cut up the car to fit a dual exhaust. But then I also don't see why everyone wants a twin tip single side exhaust rather than a single tip. The M5 quad setup is nice, but so are single side twin tips or a single side single tip. I however do think exposed tips are way better than the OEM turn down nonsense. That is a nice thing though we all have different ideas about what makes these cars look good. I am sure plenty of people disagree with or have very different aesthetic ideas than I do.

On my experience, when people say "perfectly fine" they are bull****ting.

Elsandusk 09-03-2012 08:03 PM

Notice any change is performance or sound?

edjack 09-03-2012 08:11 PM

My hot-rodding Daddy used to say, "Looks don't make it run."

+1
If the right side can't look like the left side, the kit won't fly. imho

I guess if someone is just dying for 4 tips it's ok... not for me but thanks for sharing.

lol this is a roast

umnitza 09-04-2012 03:32 PM

We built this because there was an incredible level of demand on Bimmerforums. The idea is that it will fit both 52X, 530, and 540 sedans with 1 exhaust for all of them.
Over 20 people requested we build it, we did. There is no other way to build this given the limitations of the E39 chassis.

One other point, it's designed to give 4hp-7hp just like our other Dyno tested quads.
Finally, the way it's designed, the exhaust gases come out of both sides at exactly the same time, FWIW, this makes this exhaust far different than other quad tipped exhausts out there.

Topaz540i 09-04-2012 03:39 PM

Can you do a quad tip lambo setup where they stack in a square and come out in the center?

This would look tuFF.

SikMindz 09-05-2012 11:47 PM

I can dig it. And I think I've seen this car around on multiple occasions and never noticed while on the move.

LalaRay 09-06-2012 02:22 AM

It looks good from some angles but makes no sense on a V configuration....

BigCo540i 09-06-2012 06:55 AM

Going hard will also leave you sitting on the side of the road with a flat tire.

bblackmond 09-06-2012 07:13 AM

Funny but true! It does look really nice.:)
