need to be educated
my first car (I was 16) was a '78 320i. Piece of junk - $500 on side of road in western Pennsylvania, rear shocks tearing apart the towers, exhaust popped a new hole every month or so, front console torn out, 50/50 paint job (looked good from 50 feet & 50 mph). I loved that car. 4-speed on the floor and used to beat my buddys' pontiacs & probes up the hills. And the handling, never felt anything like it. I cried the day another new driver pulled out in front of me and I t-boned him, totaled the car.
Anyway, 16 years later... I want the same thing again. Doesn't have to be '78, but certainly an E21. And now I can afford to get one in GOOD condition. What I want for an everyday driver and hobby:
- good body condition (I am thinking its been in CA/the southwest its whole life, not in the humid south where I live now or in road salt territory where I grew up)
- 2 door preferred, will consider 4 door
- generally in original condition, not looking for a racer
- oh and working A/C is pretty key... I live in Houston
I don't know much about these cars now and plan to start reading through this forum to get a sense for whats out there. Can anyone help me get started - what price range am I going to be in for what I am looking for? ...thanks!
did you ever find your dream e21?
well, if you want one that needs almost no work, you're looking at one in the $3k - $4.5k range. and imo, that's the norm, but every now and then a rare one will pop up. I saw one on ebay out of the DC area about a week ago, with a $4k bid and it still didn't get past the seller's reserve. So this car may still be available on ebay again. It was really, really mint and low miles, 85k miles.
also, in the e21 there's the 323i...a rare gem on any day to find, but even more rare if it's in top condition. the 323i is a euro car that has the 6 cyl. engine in it, and it has disc brakes in the rear.
I think the working AC is going to be your biggest hurdle there. I don't even think it was an option on the 77 320i. My 77 320i has no AC option on the stock console. I'd say it was for sale at an unreasonable price but I have already become strongly emotionally attached to the vehicle.
i just like the picture
I had to go here to get a shiny, new factory gas cap because some lunatic put a Volvo gas cap on it. Probably the same lunatic who painted gold metallic over the factory Alpine White.
This car is for sale for a totally unreasonable price, like I mentioned but should also say, the engine is from a 1983 320i and has about 140,000 miles on it.
