Door locking noise
When I lock the doors from the drivers side with the key (probably the same from the inside), the doors lock and then the drivers side makes a loud grinding sort of noise for a second.

Realoem shows an actuator but Bentley only shows a locking drive assembly.

Need help - thanks.

Take the door trim off; set the catch part of the lock to 'door closed' position and establish exactly what part is making the noise. Go on from there. Always leave another window down to aviod lock outs.
Body computer do smart enough to close windows on lock up.

The grinding noise is most definitely from your actuator. There is a plastic gear in it that can get its teeth worn if it slips.

If it works Okay then I wouldn't try to fix it until it breaks, have to have another actuator on hand though. Unfortunately they don't sell the gear separately.

Even if you leave the widows open the double lock mechanism will still keep you out.

Did this just start happening and didn't happen before? I'm asking because, at least on my 94 530i, is that when you lock the door on the driver's side, there is an extra grinding sound for half a second which I think is normal and it is the gear that locks the deadbolt into place and I think I remember my older 535i making the same noise.

If you lock the doors from the inside, that is, when you are inside the car, it shouldn't make the noise though, because that does not activate the deadbolt. Press the locks down when you are inside the car and see if it makes the same noise and if it does, then I might worry about pulling the door trim.

That's my two cents for what it's worth. Before you start taking the panel off, I'd make sure it's not just the deadbolt doing what it's supposed to do.

It just started happening about a month ago. Right before I put the car on blocks to work on it so the battery has been disconnected for a few weeks. I think I sat in the car and locked from the inside and still heard the noise.

As per the plastic gear. It reminds me of my old Saturn. The odometer had a plastic gear wheel that wore down. A guy used to rebuild them with a similar part from a hobby store. Might be worth looking into.....
