540iA stuck in 1st and 2nd gear
So I was out tonight, driving the 540i and it was fine. I was driving for about 4 hours, not roughly or fast but driving the whole 4 hours. The gearbox then suddenly at around 50mph went into 2nd and refused to shift out. I put it in Steptronic and it would still not go out of 2nd. It'll go into first but not third, four or fifth. There is no check engine light, ABS or traction control light. This literally happened 20 minutes ago so I haven't had the chance to see if "letting it cool down" and starting it tomorrow will fix the issue but I'm really scared now because it wasn't a pleasant experience driving in a 80km/h zone in 2nd gear at around 40km/h. Luckily I was close to home and so I managed to snail it home at very slow speeds. The roads are clear at night which is good. What do you think guys?

So this is definitely what happened 0_0 . Will I have to find a replacement or can it be rebuilt.

When a trans gos into failsafe....wont it display on the dash "Failsafe". Pretty sure it does. Sounds like it could be something as simple as a shift selector module on the tranny.

Just went out in the car now, it shifts and behaves fine. What the hell is happening??!!! I mean I'm scared now because what if it randomly does it again at 70mph on the highway. The mechanic rapes me with repairs. I'll take it to him again but honestly I don't get why this car won't just behave *sigh* I'm not even thrashing it.

I will do the easiest and the cheapest thing first, change the oil and filter.

There are always shops that will diagnose for free. I had a shop connect a diagnostic computer and test some inner parts for me. They found it was just toast. When a trans goes bad, it goes bad. You'll waste time dinking with possible options. I just found a 4spd auto replacement used for $500 and swapped it. I could do it in 2 hours now that I've done it once. I'm no pro, and I didn't use more than a simple set of tools and a floor jack. I've gotten nearly 100,000 miles out of a used trans with 100,000 miles already on it. Don't really see the value in people blowing $3k on a rebuild when you still hear of failures with them. That's 6 used ones in my book.

Correction, I had to bend and grind one wrench to fit the coolant line fitting and buy a torx drive for the mating bolts. Don't drop the damn torque converter bolts in the housing either, THAT sucked a few times.

It could be that the Crankshaft/Camshaft sensor is going bad!

e39540iv8 10-09-2012 12:14 AM

Sensors on this thing are so expensive. You take a look at the engine bay and say "it doesn't look THAT complicated" but then you see the price for a CPS or MAF *facepalm* I'll get the car diagnosed ASAP to see what the hell is happening. Seriously though, BMW: You build great cars but you build them bad so you can drain repair money from us.

How much is a CPS in Aust?
