S54 Swap

I am planning on swapping in an S54 and moving towards total track set up for my son and I . Over the weekend I located the engine, harness and ecu so we are on our way to getting this done. We are also going to put in a 3.91 in the ass so this thing should be lightning quick. I did stumble across another s54 that the owner said he would sell for $3000. Don't have any details but if you are interested you can contact me and i can give you his contact info. Hope to have all the parts in about a month and then go from there. Should be a fun project.

Excited to see how this turns out. What are you doing to for engine management? Also drive by wire or cable?

You always have something cool going on. Why cant I have cool things going on?

Please, proceed with a camera. These builds are awesome in pictures

Will post plenty of pics. Hope to go get the engine Friday. I have a s54 harness and the s54 control box coming and they should be here by the weekend. Stopping in at Bimmerworld for there bolt on goodies and a tune for the box.
Basic grocery list is:
a set of their ceramic headers for s54
new rod bearings 'cause as long as it is out they should be done
new engine mounts
pipe to hook up to e36 exhaust
Bimmerworld harness conversion
Hope to line up all the parts first. In the mean time I am going to install the 3.91 to see what kind of umph that gives the car with the current motor. Hope to have all the parts lined up for the engine swap soon so I can get going on that.

FYI I did find another engine that a guy wants $3000 for and an ecu and harness for $400 if anyone is shopping for Christmas already.

I had to fly back from Wisconsin early due to sick dog. Ended up putting her down and that sucks! Good news is it gave me a couple of extra days unsupervised by my wife so I went out and picked up an S54. http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/w...P/MVC-043S.jpg

Now to figure out a plan of attack. I think that once I begin this car will no longer see the street (legally) so it allows some latitude on how it gets set up. Crisscross , you asked about the management, I need to do some research on this to see what the pros and cons are. I like simple!

Waiting for coated bearings although I am considering not using them. I am thinking that I would do some sort of maintenance on this engine every winter and checking the bearings would be on that list. Also I was/ am looking for some info on guys that have used coated bearings and what results they have had. I am also thinking that underdrive pulleys would be nice also. Anyway lots to think about while tearing this down a bit to see what I have. After telling me there was no harness the engine came with one so I now have an extra. ECU should be here Monday or Tuesday.

Sorry to hear about your dog :(

How'd you like WI?

JayMac 10-13-2012 10:09 AM

No worries on the dog but you miss them when gone. Grew up in WIsconsin, folks still live there. Lived in Wauwatosa, Madison, Wausau, and Oshkosh. Like the change of seasons but hate winter. Been out here since '01. Gotta love the cheese!

Woo, exciting! Can't wait to see this unfold.

You are one cool dad. I wish my dad would do this kinda stuff with me :(

Really looking forward to the build! Good luck!

Don't get too crazy giving me props. He doesn't know we're spending his tuition cash!

Sub'd... Good luck!!!

Well nothing drops a turd in your punch bowl like opening up a box of parts and finding out they shipped the wrong ECU! After a few tense minutes of thinking I got screwed, finally got the vendor (eBay) on the phone and the correct one is on the way. So I have the engine (but have to wait on the bearings), ECU, harness, coated headers and connector pipe, engine mounts, rear dif (3.91), harness and pigtail to plug into e36 wiring covered. I am also thinking about a set of underdrive pulleys as long as I'm blowing the little dudes tuition stash. Last issue that needs to gt figured out is the gas pedal. Off hand, anyone know hay there are different pedals for manual and automatic e46 dbw?

bimmer claus 10-15-2012 04:58 PM

awe mannnn :(

Mr Gusta 10-15-2012 09:15 PM

3.91 is horrible

gearing drops maybe a 10th in the 1/4 from 3.15 to 3.91

dont ruin the car, keep the 3.15 and make it real light, you will enjoy 75 in 2nd

good luck with your project and do the headers before you drop the motor in! you will thank me ;)

JayMac 10-16-2012 08:52 AM

Ah! the great debate between fast and quick.
Have at it: http://www.bokchoys.com/differential...calculator.htm
I used info from this sie and used 6500 redline with the 3.15 versus 8000 with the 3.91.

Not sure if the math is correct and I will run it at a few different site but the car basically is the same speed. If we don't like it we change the gear set. No big deal. FYI final drive on a CaymanS is 3.88. Similar hp and this car should be much lighter. Since I figure we will spend much less time near 150 mph, I will go for quick and see how it pans out. Either way it is all part of the fun!

bimmer claus 10-16-2012 08:53 AM

+1 on quick ;D

JayMac 10-16-2012 09:09 AM

Found this while doing research:

Where do you think you'll exceed 134mph ?
The fastest E36 M3 3.0 speed trap recording during one of our Silverstone GP race meetings in 2010 was 131mph. (We don't allow 6 speed boxes). Most of the E36 3.0 racers cope quite happily with 3.91

Not saying any of it is correct but do a search on theoretical top speed. Most cars can't get there due to physics so I like the quick version versus fast, Regardless it should be fun!

bimmer claus 10-16-2012 09:15 AM

When ive read alot about the 6 speeds too most say you dont even need or use 6th gear whats the point id stay with 5 man even though the 6 speed does fit perfectly i dont know if you building a canyon carver street car or a track monster though

JayMac 10-16-2012 09:18 AM

Plan is for a D/E car. Something my son and I can share so I am giving up my Cobra for something a little more drivable.

bimmer claus 10-16-2012 09:21 AM

Thats awesomeeee building a beamer with your son wish my dad would do this "sadface" super awesome man just go with what you want then i personally love quick nothing better then that 0-60 laying rubber
